Marko, excuse the poor snobby travelers who have never been to lovely Spain. They are to busy going to France & Italy, again and again. They do not know that Europe consists of many other countries with wonderful culture and cuisine. I have been to Spain several times and can honestly say I have enjoyed all of the Tapas bars that we frequented. Ask the locals for suggestions. The spaniards are friendly and helpful. Do not miss the world famous museums... The Guggenheim in Bilbao & The Prado in Madrid. The nightlife in Spain is great! Check out madridman.com & okspain.org for more info. Have a marvelous time!

Marko--- you need to go to La Torre de Oro, kitty-corner in Plaza Mayor. It is an Andalucian Tapas Bar, not for the faint of heart. The walls are plastered with bullfighting pictures, specifically taken at the moment when the bullfighter has killed the bull or the bull has killed the bullfighter. The tapas are really good, specially the Gambas al Ajillo (Garlic Shrimp). Enjoy Spain, a beautiful, amazing country with wonderful people.

In Barcelona check out Tapa Tapa on the Passeig de Gracia. We had a wonderful lunch for 4 with a good bottle of cava for $40 US, total.

haven't been to Seville or Barcelona, but the Plaza Santa Ana in Madrid is a good place for bar-crawling and tapas.

There was a post on nightlife in Barcelona a couple of weeks ago, with many good suggestions. That said, I'll repost my reply to that one.
I was in Barcelona last May and had my favorite tapas at Cal Pep. Very small, very busy, not much English spoken. Trust them and they will bring you food until you are ready to burst.
The Fodors guide had a very good list of xampanyerias(cava bars) so we spent one evening going to all of them. Tapa Tapa was okay, food was a little on the chain-restuarant side, but if you are looking for something really great, head to Cal Pep.

I second the suggestion for Madrid -- go to Plaza Santa Ana and enjoy any of the tapas bars in the square (such as Cerveceria Alemania that Hemingway used to frequent). Or head down one of the little streets off Plaza de Santa Ana (like the street that runs on the other side of the square to the Reina Victoria Hotel), and the little streets off that are teaming with great tapas bars.
Shannon

Tapas central in Madrid is about a block south and east of Plaza del Sol. Rick Steves book gives the most detailed itinerary. Look at that. Our favorite was La Taurina.

Tapas central in Seville is a street that runs into the plaza with the cathedral and La Giralda. The street begins across the square from the tower. Start with the place on the corner, which I believe is called La Giralda after the tower.

Dear Marko,

I agree with x, Mateos Gago street is like tapas central in Seville. The bar he mentions is Cerveceria Giralda and it´s the 2nd.on the left, after the restaurant El Giraldillo, which is just ok, but quite touristy.
Halfway up this street, make a right on Meson del Moro street, which ends at a crossroads where you´ll find the great
Las Teresas bar in the corner on the left.
Also, try Enrique Becerra, great restaurant with small tapas bar at the front, in calle Gamazo, near Plaza Nueva. Some of the best tapas you´ll find, and great service.

Also very nice is the bar crawl across the river in calle Betis, with outdoor cafes with a great view of the city.

In Madrid, there are thousands. Take a walk down Cava Baja, I love Casa Lucas. In Seville Enrique Becerra has great food. Tons in Barcelona, Ciutat Comtal has great tapas. Lots of tapas chains there too, some aren't bad. Anyplace with an X in the name is usually good. Just read Maribels guides, or walk in and look at the tapas on the counter, if it looks good, stay.
