Switzerland/Northern Italy
Another request for opinion on a Switzerland/Italy itinerary. After reading many postings and reports, this is what I have so far. We have 14 days to enjoy this beautiful area of Europe. We are seniors but fit and enjoy low-key hiking along with beautiful scenery. I haven't added number of days in each area as I haven't figured that out yet. Would welcome opinion on that. Also, I'm looking for thoughts on is this the best route to take for the area's we want to visit? Also, have I added too much for a 14 day trip? We don't travel with the mindset that we need to see everything. Many thanks in advance for your time..
Day 1: Fly into Zurich. Take train to Lucerne. Stay in Lucerne for 2? nights.
Take train to Locarno. Stay in Locarno for ? nights
Take ferry from Locarno to Cannobio, Italy. Stay in Cannobio ? nights
Take train to Domodossola, Italy. Stay in Domodossola for ? nights. Take side trips
Take train from Domodossola to Murren, Switzerland. Stay in Murren for ? nights
Take train from Murren to Zurich. Stay overnight in Zurich. Return to states next day.
OR
Take train from Murren to Bern. Stay in Bern one night. Head to Zurich next day.

In which monh?
That's very important to know in order to give a good answer.
Although the places you mention are all open all the year round, side trip and hiking possibilites will not be the same every month.
The Domodossola - Brig leg of the railway line to Spiez - Interlaken will be closed for works during during some periods of the year.

FWIW, I'm not a fan of Mürren -- although many Fodorites favor it, I found it too kitschy. For that part of Switzerland, I prefer Wengen or even Lauterbrunnen.
I think Bern is underrated. It depends on what you want to see and experience, but FWIW, I'm not sure if one night would be sufficient.

Consider heading to The Engadine after a couple days decompressing in Zurich.....take the train to St Moritz, stay in Sils a few days, head for Italy and base at Lake Garda (or Como) to explore the area. Fly home from Milan. Area around Lauterbrunnen also an excellent choice but much more crowded and you will feel obliged to visit the usual and traditional mountain attractions which will keep you on the move and not quite as leisurely and relaxed. You can't go wrong anywhere you go. The Engadine is sometimes overlooked and it is great.

Switzerland:
everything will be open, Murren will even be busy (Bernese school holidays)
Wengen would have more afternoon sun in automn that Muerrenm where it disappears earlier behind the hgh mountains)
Cannobio:
will be very calm, but everything is open.
There will be just 1 daily ferry between Locarno and Cannobio, but there are about 10 daily buses via Brissago (bus change) all the year round (VCO Trasporti)
Domodossola:
everything open, trains to Spiez will run (except a few hrs around noon).
Buses to the mountain valleys will run, except that to the Toce waterfalls
all gondolas from Macugnaga to the glacier areas will be closed
