Switzerland, drive or train pass

Going to Switzerland in May 2012. Always had car before but would like to try trains. Geneva to Interlocken to Italian lakes, end up in Milan or Venice. Any thoughts?

Our family of 4 took trains all over Switzerland (from Geneva to Germany (Swiss border) and found it very convenient and relaxing.

great sources IMO for dope on Swiss trains and various passes like the Swiss Pass, Half-Fare Card, Swiss Card, Swiss Transfer Ticket - only a few rides can make one of the above pay off - www.swisstravelsystem.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.ricksteves.com.

Hi mmjd,

Yes, trains are definitely the way to go. They're fun, convenient, and better for the environment -- it's a win/win/win!!

For your trip from Geneva to Interlaken, go on the scenic route via Montreux, Gstaad, & Zweisimmen. It's the Golden Pass routing.

For your train schedules and basic point-point fares, use the Swiss rail site

www.rail.ch

Have fun as you plan!

You cannot even drive in many parts of the Berner Oberland above Interlaken but must garage your car at predatory parking rates and must take trains or mountain conveyances to get around, or footpaths.
