Leslie:

Look at the posting called "Como or Positano--3 days" (or something like that). I visited Stresa on a tour, we stayed at a hotel right near the port called something like "Milano e Speranza", which was a straightforward, not exactly modern, very clean and wonderfully located place. I noticed quite a few hotels in town in all categories. I loved the town. It's a great place to visit.

Leslie,

I also loved the town. I wasn't expecting much was so pleasantly surprised. Lago Maggiore is lovely with 3 wonderful islands that you must visit. In fact, one of the best meals I've had was on the island of Isola Pescatore at a hotel/restaurant called Verbano. The restaurant is outdoors looking out over the lake and the food was fabulous.
I staued at LaPalma which was very nice with a terrace overlooking the lake.

I second what Dona has said. We had lunch overlooking the lake on Isola de Madre at a restaurant called La Pirrateria, wonderful mean, not expensive, beautiful day. The islands are a well worth experience.

Leslie, I find Maggiore and Stresa as
enjoyable as Como and Bellagio. Be sure
to visit Lake Orta about 15 miles west.
The pretty road thru Gignese is a good
way to go. You can see it all about this
area by going to www.stresa.net. There
are numerous good hotels depending on
your budget. My favorite is the Villaminta about 2 miles north of town
if you are driving. Be sure to take the
cable up up Mt. Mottarone for views of
the Alps and Lakes to die for. Also, ask
me about a place called Val Versasca if
you are into nature and forgotten cultures---it is about an hour away.

I too loved the islands in Lago Maggiore with Stresa being a great base for exploration. I have several travel sites in my favorites but don't know how to hyperlink in this forum. If you e-mail me directly, I can send you the links.
Ellen
