St. Regis Hotel in Rome
Just spent four nights at the wonderful Sy. Regis in Rome. This is a world class hotel, housed in a truly beautiful, very old building. Our room was spacious, the bed very comfortable, but THE memorable things about our visit were the MARVELOUS "Butler" service and the SENSATIONAL breakfast, both of which were included in our room rate.
The Butler brought us THE best coffee we had during our 12 night visit to Rome, Tuscany and Florence. She also did impeccable pressing of my dress shirts and everything was done perfectly and with a graciousness that was truly remarkable.
The buffet breakfast, with a friendly chef doing egg dishes to order was just out of this world. Not one of those overblown brunch type things, just pretty much anything one might want for breakfast, lots of selections, with all items being top quality and they served it until 11am!!! It was also served in their magnificent salon, in which you felt you were the star in some wonderful MGM film from decades past.
On the minus side: the shower was a bit cramped, with no foot rest on which one could wash their feet, which is a pet peeve of mine. Very difficult for my wife to shave her legs. There was only one sink, and two would have been much better. The room was not dirty, but it was not spotless either and I felt that housekeeping needed a bit of improvement. The furnishings were a bit gaudy for our taste and the sofa was downright uncomfortable.
All in all, the experience was a very positive one. IF we were ever going back to Rome--which we have ZERO thoughts of doing--it would be a no brainier to book the St. Regis again. However, Rome itself was a truly disappointing experience, as was Italy in general and we won't be coming back anytime soon. The best thing about Italy is how it makes you appreciate coming home to America.

Maybe you could have stayed at the St. Regis in New York, or some other one and had a much better vacation without all the hassle and extra expense of going so far away and getting stuck in a horrible city you had no interest it. My guess is the housekeeping is better at the NYC one, and the furnishings would have been much nicer. Seems a shame to have to travel so far just to stay in a great hotel.

Glad you liked the hotel. For most mortals the price of EUR 400+ a night (off-season, without breaksfast) is somewhat out of the range of what they are able or willing to pay for the privilege.
People differ wildly in the way they appreciate urban chaos. You happen to be allergic to it. Others love it or take it as it is.

jelopez33, I suspect you're wrong. If it's a troll, he went to a lot of effort to ask legitimate questions about Rome, Florence, and Tuscany before they departed -- and this post as well as the other Rome post sound like a natural progression from those posts.
There's nothing wrong with liking luxury hotels, by the way, and I didn't mean to put anyone down for that. But when the only positive thing one finds in a city like Rome is the inside of your hotel, it just seems so sad that they had to travel so far just to enjoy a nice hotel.

danon, I avoided responding to the leg shaving bit too, but I really wanted to say "haven't you ever heard of 'when in Rome do as the Romans do'?"

Yes, that's just it. But would it have been sadder had they stayed at a shabby hotel? Less sad? Would we have said, you would have liked Rome better had your hotel been less crummy?
I don't know.
FWIW, I hate when there's nowhere to prop a foot to shave one's legs! There's TMI for you, lol.

The Hotel does not make you like the City more or less but it may have an impact on your overall stay. We just end returned from Italy and my Hotel in Rome was Ok. We stayed at Hotel Adriano. My shower was clean updated, very small.....I am small as well and my face was very close to the shower door. Could imagine a bigger person having a difficult time. I liked Rome, we only stayed 2 nights and that was enough for me, everything was nice, some beautiful and historic sites. In comparison to the other places we stayed, Rome was my least favorite. However I loved Positano, Tuscany, Florence, Lake Como and Venice.
Just saying not everyone has to like Rome. However it is hard for me to believe that someone does not like all of Italy.....but again it is possible. Different strokes.

And to no surprise:

As was Italy in general. Oh good, more Bella Italia for the rest of us.

I'm always a little surprised when people seem offended when someone reports not liking a place they love. Here's couple used to deluxe travel for whom Italy didn't click. I'm interested to know why, but their disappointment does not affect my own enjoyment.

Fra_Diavolo, I don't think most remarks (both here and on the other thread) have been about being "offended" because someone didn't like Rome. It has been more about how anyone can go anywhere in the world and find absolutely nothing about where they ended up (did they do any reading or planning at all?) that they could see anything positive with. I think that's a big difference from just not liking a place. And since they spent time in three different locations in Italy and apparently saw nothing worthwhile in ANY of them except their hotel, it seems these are probably people who would be much better off staying home.

I wouldn't say people seem offended, but rather terribly judgmental, so I see Fra's point. Throw in the cost of the OP's hotel and there's a tasty stew going on of both cultural superiority (he hates Italy, what a rube!) and biting envy (but he's a rich rube, dammit!).
Going to make popcorn...

Streamliner,
Thanks for posting a TR. I love your style of writing and your observations. They make a great change and offer a new twist on travelling priorities.
Oh to be so delightfully decadent and self-indulgent, if for only a few days.
Did the hotel at least offer a quality razor?

St. Regis looks good, but if I had the dough to really splash out in Rome (one of my favorite cities in the world, for whatever that's worth), I'd stay here:

I'm sorry to read this, as I hoped you would have a better time once you left Rome. Would you care to share why you were disappointed?
