St. Regis Grand-Location

I made a res. for the St. Regis Grand. In some of the talk messages some say the location is not that great. My wife and I really want to relax and also do Rome. Has anyone stayed there? I am hoping to walk to the Steps and Trevi. Are they a short walk
like the hotel says?

It's a stretch to call it a "short walk" from St. Regis Grand to the Spanish Steps or to Trevi Fountain.

It's not in a "bad" location. Just not in a location I would recommend to any of my friends or family.

Fabulous place to go for dinner, though (Vivendo).

Best wishes,

Rex
Don't know what Rex will say, but one very nice hotel near the Spanish Steps and Via Veneto is the Hotel Eden. It also has one of the best restaurants in Rome up on the top floor, with quite a view of the city.

There are others even closer and more luxurious, such as the Hassler right at the top of the Steps.

Sorry about the delay in answering you again, Sam.

I suggest that you take a look at http://www.venere.com/it/roma to get oriented. The area(s) I recommend fall roughly into a triangle bounded by Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona and Piazza del Popolo. This is generally - - but not quite exactly - - synonymous with the "Centro Storico". It's a little bit larger than the quadrilateral shown when you click on the Pantheon on the webpage listed above - - http://www.venere.com/it/roma/it_rm_pantheon.html.en is what you get when you do that.

I cannot personally tell you about any places quite on par with St. Regis Grand in this/these location(s). Minerva comes closest, and I have only eaten lunch there, not stayed overnight. As has already been mentioned, Eden and Hassler are also a close match - - and I think de Russie too.

But I would not obsess in finding the "best" 5-star hotel in the "best" location. There are many good 3 and 4 star hotels in the area(s) I recommend. And your visit to Rome will be none the diminished by staying in one of those.

del Senato is a good place to start.
The St Regis Grand is by far the best and the "grandest" of the 5-star deluxe hotels in Rome. It was completely renovated just a couple of years ago and is really an oasis of calm in the midst of the bustling city. As soon as you enter the lobby you are in another world, where the concierges and staff will take great care of you.

It is a short walk to Via Veneto, a short walk to Piazza Barberini and the Trevi Fountain (downhill), and not that far from Piazza di Spagna if you keep walking downhill along the Via Tritone and then turn along the Via Due Macelli so you finish at the bottom rather than at the top of the Spanish Steps.

The Grand Hotel Minerva in Piazza della Minerva is also a fine 5-star luxe hotel located across the square from the treasure-filled Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva just behind the Pantheon. This is a great central location near Piazza Navona, Trevi, and the Spanish Steps.

It's interesting - - and welcome - - to see you coming here to contribute here on this forum. Mayta. If you search on your own first name here, you will see that I am one of the few people who have ever mentioned your services on this forum, based on our correspondence about a year ago.

Interestingly enough, the first person ever to mention your name here was the late great Edward Gehrlein of www.twenj.net fame. But I can't find anyone who has reported any actual experience booking with you.

Your experience as a tour guide professional will be very, very valuable here - - just as your opinion of the SRG and its location are. But beware that anything that comes across as promoting your services will be very poorly received by a number of vocal, and often anonymous critics.

Some will even say that I have done a disservice to even mention my familiarity with your services as a tour guide.

I hope that "we" can benefit from your visiting "us" here on the forum, and that no one tries to "run you off".
Topping - - if only to serve as a marker of a thread that has been indexed - - though I can't tell if the indexing was on the 16th or 17th.
Rex, could you please explain what indexing is and how it works here? Thanks.

Ben has explained it quite capably on "his" thread - - http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessa...=2&tid=1396891 - - exhorting Fodors to bring the indexing up to date. But I will expand on how I know WHEN the indexing is done.

The "index" is a giant "dictionary file". It contains every word ever used on this forum, from "aa" to "zzz" (and maybe zzzz and zzzzz etc).

It contains the word "Paris" and "restaurants".

And Haines
And Gehrlein
And twenj
and rbmd

and every word has a "pointer" to any thread on which it appears. Every thread has a "uid" (Unique identifier). They actually call it a "tid" (thread identifier?) in their SQL code. This thread is 1390813 - - you can see it in your URL window of your browser if you are looking at this thread (well, for sure you can see it there if you go to post, or open it a new window).

Every week or so - - just like Ben - - I search for "my mark" (<<rbmd>&gt. That search will retrieve this thread - - so I know that this thread has been indexed.

But I know that I have posted on newer threads than this one. And none of those are retrieved. So I know that the indexing was last updated after July 16. This morning, I further narrowed it down to sometime between 4 and 7 pm on July 17. Why? Because I felt like it - - it is obvious (at least to some people) that this is quite a hobby for me.

Nothing posted new since that time can be located with the search function, as of today. That's getting close to 2000 posts from the past 17 days.

As an aside, I know from

http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgTopics.jsp?fid=2&searchText=rbmd&start=4900
< BR>that there are 4946 threads with the word "rbmd" indexed.

I rounded up the un-indexed ones the "hard" way - - scrolling back, and capturing the URLs.

By this reckoning, I passed post number 5000 yesterday morning. Unceremoniously.

When the indexing gets updated, I'll be able to check. I marked the one I think it is with the word "fivethousand" - - which does not currently appear in the index file.
