Due to a physical disability, I have difficulty with steps. I wanted to stay at the Hassler or Intercontinental but I am concerned as to how I would get to the bottom of the steps.

Don't take the steps. You can arrive at the piazza at the bottom of the steps by walking the other way and following some downhill streets.

Wait a minute... am I right in assuming that you have read these hotels are "at the top of the Spanish Steps" and therefore think that this is the only way to reach them? The hotels are on a street, reachable by foot and car.

From what I've read, these hotels are on the Via Sistena at the top of the steps. I am assuming that going up and down the steps was the quickest way to get to Via del Corso, Piazza Popolo, Via Condotti, etc.

Yes, and if you walk down Via Sistina in the direction away from the steps, you'll begin going dowhill. Soon you'll reach a downhill cross street ...just making a big U back to the piazza. Certainly it's a bit longer than taking the steps, but if you can't use steps it's the other choice. There is no public elevator that I know of.

There is an elevator descending (or ascending) from/to Trinita dei Monti (the church) to/from Piazza di Spagna ( the Spanish Square, below the Spanish Steps). However, I read on the net that the elevator is not working. You should check with the hotel, before booking, what the present conditions are.

The Spanish Steps metro station is served by escalators as well. Again, I recommend that you ask to the hotel if it would be suitable for you and your disability.

Just got back from Rome. The Hassler is at top of steps. There is an elevator most of way to top of steps...and a few stairs as well. If you are at bottom of steps, walk to the left around the corner from the Furla building, walk straight down street to subway entrance and you will see elevator that takes you to top of steps. Turn right at top and walk towards the church. Hotel Hassler is behind church.
