Spain for 2 weeks, including over Easter weekend - itinerary help?

Hello! I am heading to Spain from April 21 to May 3 (2 weeks) this year, and am hoping some more informed travellers can help with my intinerary.

We are flying into Madrid, and intend to keep this as our 'home base' to travel from. My original itinerary included the first and last 4 nights in Madrid and then 4 nights in Zaragoza, with short trips to the surrounding areas. But now that I've been reading about Easter celebrations in Spain, I am wondering if we should go to Zaragoza for Good Friday, or if there might be a better itinerary to take in the celebrations?

We are a couple in our 30s/40s and like people watching and night life, if that helps. Both of us have a great interest in history, which is why we picked Zaragoza to visit. We based it on a recommendation from a friend, but are absolutely flexible in our itinerary.

Any suggestions are very much appreciated!

Is there a reason why you don't want to head to Andalucia for Semana Santa (ie. Sevilla, Malaga, Granada, Cordoba? Personally I'm not a huge fan of Zaragoza. I had read good things about the city and spent 2 nights there. It was enjoyable but I wasn't overwhelmed. I can't imagine 4 nights. The biggest processionals will be leading up to Good Friday when the processionals run all night (Thurs eve/Friday pm). Have you considered Salamanca if you don't want to head South? It's full of history and has is supposed to be good for Semana Santa.

8 nights in Madrid seems like alot to me but others I know would find this fine. Where were you plannning on daytrips from Madrid?

If you like night life, Barcelona can't be beat. I also can't imagine going to Spain and not seeing Granada, Cordoba and Sevilla.

Thank you for the replies!

We had picked Zaragoza only because a friend had suggested it based on our mutual interest in history. We originally were thinking of going up to Barcelona but we couldn't change our flight to leave from there. So we don't have to stay around Madrid, but do have to fly out of there and thought it would be easiest to stay in the area.

This trip to Spain is a gift from my very generous and sweet boyfriend. I hadn't thought to head south in Spain, thinking I absolutely 'had to do' Madrid and Barcelona

I'll look into Salamanca (also suggested by a friend), and south of Madrid.

For sure Andalucia, for Semana Santa/Easter Week. The event described below for sure is a must, if it can be fitted in.

For Holy Week – (Semana Santa) , there will be street processions and events, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday.
Holy Week.

For those visiting the region among the most representative event,is to go to Cuevas del Campo,in the Province of Granada,Andalucia, to witness drama and reenactment of the Passion unfold, Death and Resurrection of Jesus, transforming the town for a few days into ancient Jerusalem, with hundreds of the local inhabitants, becoming actors. Cuevas del Campo, has been recognized for this world renowned event. As a result Cueva del Campo has received numerous awards and accolades for example Theatre World International 2004, among others.

Semana Santa isn't at the end of April, it's at the start. I believe it kicks off April 1st and continues through April 9th. Seville has it's Feria starting on the 23rd, so that's an option during your stay. Jerez also has a fair in May (not sure if it starts by the 3rd) that might be worth looking into also.

Semana Santa (Easter) is less than 7 days away so you will miss it is. 1st May is a national holiday, but nothing special happens

Consider the exceptional celebrations in Málaga city. Much less tourists than in Sevilla, but just as intense and a favourite with the Spanish themselves. http://www.semana-santa-malaga.com/e...ek-malaga.html

The actor Antonio Banderas is a very proud malagueño. His pregón (announcement) of the Málaga Semana Santa in majestic Teatro Cervantes last year is said to go down in history as one of the most powerful ever. Even non-Spanish speakers should get an idea of why: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpjeDKTnKQQ
