Somewhere to eat dinner on a Sunday?

My husband and I will be staying at Mas d-entrement outside of Aix-en-Provence on a Sunday night. As far as we've been able to research, there is NO ONE open for lunch or dinner on a Sunday! What is one to do? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are you looking for a really major special place? I just looked in my journal and saw that on a Sunday evening we wandered through the area of restaurants near our hotel, we stayed at Augustins, just off Cours Mirabeau, and had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant there. No mention of having trouble, I think lots of restaurants were open, we wandered and chose one, but oddly enough I didn't write the name down -- just what we ate. We spent the day hiking up Mount St. Victoire and packed a lunch for the top, but I do recall a wonderful looking very busy place near the parking area there that was doing a major lunch business. I don't think you'll have a problem, unless you have your heart set on a very well known and Michelin starred place or something like that. Those are the ones that are likely to be closed on Sunday.

Like Patrick, I am having trouble understanding what information has led you to believe that Sunday closings are common. I have not personally been to Aix-en-Provence on a Sunday, but a few well-known places mention closings on OTHER days of the week, not Sunday.

Two other outstanding choices - - one in Aix itself - - and the other a good excuse to get out of town and go to Les Baux.

Both of these have some comments (and very high scores) on Fodors Rants'n'Raves if you want personal impressions from those who have been there recently.

Le Clos de la Violette
10 av. de la Violette
Aix-en-Provence, France
Phone: 04-42-23-30-71
http://www.closdelaviolette.fr/

and

L'Oustau de la Baumaniere
Val d'Enfer
Les Baux-de-Provence 13520, France
Phone: 04-90-54-33-07
Fax: 04-90-54-40-46
http://www.oustaudebaumaniere.com

These are both expensive, upper-crust places, and reservations in advance would surely be a good idea.

Best wishes,

Rex
I've noticed a lot of restaurants being closed in Provence on Sunday, it's not that unusual. Others close on Mondays a lot, it seems. I've seen that information in the descriptions in Michelin and Gault-Millau, for one source. Also, I stayed there and I know Mas Entremont is one of them (and their restaurant is a very good one used by a lot of people who don't stay there), and many other places I looked at in Provence were, also. IN particular, I think a lot of the B&Bs or inns that also serve meals will tend to not do that on Sunday. However, I don't think you'll have a problem within a large city like Aix, as Patrick noted.

My information on restaurants being closed on Sundays comes from two sources: Mad d'Entrement where we are staying (the owner said their restaurant is closed on Sundays, as were most restaurants in the area) and from Frommers.com, which listed five restaurants in Aix, all of which are closed on Sundays. I guess we will just drive into Aix and wander the streets til we find someplace!
