http://www.trenitalia.it/en/index.html

Many find it difficult to actually make a purchase at the site, but it's easy to research schedules and prices. I usually wait until I arrive in Italy to buy tickets. Your route is a popular one with frequent trains.

The ferrovie dello stato just links you up to the Trenitalia site.

Hi E,

If you will be in Rome for a day or more, you can buy your tickets there from any travel agent or at the train stations for the same price as online.

The only reason IMO to use the extremely flummoxing trenitalia.com site is if you want to save a bit of money on advanced purchase of cheaper seats that you will not get in Rome i think - but the site is so impossibly frustrating to most Fodorites it seems that i would just wait

easiest IMO would to be to buy your Rome-Naples tickets at the Rome Airport upon arrival - at the airport train station.

Or in the stations i have found the automatic ticket machines idiot-proof (i could use them) - quick and easy - quite the opposite of trenitalia.com (though if you want to try Ira in the past has been extremely helpful in walking you thru it - others Fodorites too - so post a Help with Trenitalia and you will get advice from folks who know how to tread this tricky site

so many trains - 2 an hour - never won't get on or rarely. To economize take the ICplus (IC+) trains that are a bit slower but significantly cheaper than the high-speed AV trains.
