I'm looking to put my dad and his wife in a hotel in Siena (Tuscany, if that needs to be clarified), preferably within the city walls. Anyone have recommendations, experience?

We just got back and stayed a cute little B&B type place called Albergo Bernini. It was inside the city walls and maybe 5 minutes walk from the Campo. It wasn't 4 star by any means but it was clean, friendly and reasonably priced. If you'd like the particulars feel free to drop me a line. <BR> <BR>While in Sienna be sure to have your parents dine at "the Dog and the Cat". <BR> Meoooow! It was the nicest place we ate the whole trip. A bit of a splurge but not outrageous and worth every penny. <BR>

Thanks. I've seen the other posts re: H. Chiusarelli, Santa Caterina, etc. Any other recent experiences with H. Chiusarelli? Thanks celeste for extensive comments previously.

Al, <BR>We stayed at the Hotel Athena in October and had a lovely room on the 8th floor with a view of the tuscan countryside. It was magnificent. Not real expensive and includes a nice breakfast. Parking is available too! DO NOT miss Cane e Gato restaurant (Dog and Cat) as mentioned above. The best meal on the entire trip! Unforgettable!

We stayed at the Cannon d'Oro in January. It's about a 3 minute walk to the campo and the rooms were basic but clean, with a pretty big bathroom. Price was about 120,000L

Al: My husband and I stayed in the very lovely Palazzo Ravizza inside walls of Siena in 1998. It has a great dining room with good dinners and the atmosphere is quaint and the rooms are ok size w/nice baths.Try to get one on back side of hotel overlooking the garden area for a great view of the countryside. This is phone # I have- but I don't know if it includes country code-(0577)28 04 62. Fax (0577) 27 13 70. The hotel has 30 rooms and was in the 60 to 90 dollar/night range then. Do <BR>not be put off by the relative inexpensiveness of it; this is a wonderful place to stay!!

I agree with the other lady about Hotel Palazzo Ravizza, it was great. <BR>And I suggest a guided individual tour with TAT which stays for tours around Tuscany. We had an incredible day. <BR>It should be on the internet at www.toursaroundtuscany.com

We stayed last October at Hotel Duomo and loved it. The location was in the center of everything, very close to Piazza del Campo and the cathedral. We had a room with a wonderful view of the cathedral, which was lighted at night. We didn't have a car, but I imagine parking would be difficult. The staff was helpful (recommended good restaurants, gave us directions to bus station, etc.) and breakfast was good. There was a rooftop terrace with view, where we had a picnic lunch bought at the shop down the street.

Al, <BR>We just got back from Tuscany last week and stayed at the Chiusarelli for two nights. It does have a good location, just minutes from the historic center and all of the great art. It is on a very busy street, however, and backs up to a soccer stadium. They are doing expansion work on the stadium, so during the day, there is a lot of noise. The rooms were fine, but the beds very hard (I like soft beds) and the airconditioner really didn't work well, so we just opened the windows for some fresh air at night. In June, it was in the 60's at night. The breakfast was the best part, unlimited coffee, eggs, ham, pastries, cereals, etc. Most Italian breakfasts consist of coffee and a pastry. I'm not sure that we would stay there again, but if you don't mind hard beds, it's a good choice. There is no parking at all, so be prepared to walk a ways to get to the hotel if you have a car. <BR>Good luck, <BR>Susan

Susan, your experience with Hotel Chiusarelli is actually a lot better than ours (read my post titled Hotel Chiusarelli). In a way, we feel lucky that we did not stay in that hotel as we ended up staying in a better hotel with free parking, near the lift to Siena center and at a lower rate.
