Sidetrips Rome to Florence; Florence to Venice

If you are travelling by train from Rome to Florence, is there a place on the way that would be a good stop for a half a day and then continue on to Florence?

Same for travel from Florence to Venice.

I'm not familiar with the Rome to Florence route, but Bologna would be a nice stop from Florence to Venice.

Orvieto is a perfect stop between Rome and Florence.

Second the recommendation for Orvieto, although I would spend a full day there. Much to see and do. Many excellent restaurants for lunch at least! Super easy by train.

I have only taken the train, so I do not have a comparison on bus/train. BUT Osteria le Logge in Siena is outstanding. Make a reservation or go early but do not miss. The specialty are these malfati (sp?) puffy ricotta cheese balls with cream sauce-sounds heavy, but it was so light and airy-also had the guinea fowl delicious!!

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade here, but:

If you want to stop in Orvieto, you have to take an IR or an IC train; the ES trains do not stop in Orvieto. Also, I recall reading here that there is no left luggage at the station; it seems that some people have paid to have the hotel near the station keep their luggage.

If you want to stop in Siena, you have to change trains in Chiusi or Grosseto. Again, the ES trains do not stop in either station. From the Siena train station, you have to take the bus up to Siena. What will you do with your luggage? According to www.trenitalia.com, there is no left luggage in Siena.
