Seville to Granada via Ronda car hire or public transport?

Is it possible and better to rent a car in Seville travel to white villages and drop of in Granada. Or is it not too difficult to do this by public transport?

Do you want to pass through some of the villages as you make your way from Sevilla to Granada in one day, or do you have time to spend the night in one or more of the villages or in Ronda?
You can find some of the bus schedules online, and you can certainly check train schedules at renfe's website. Without knowing which villages you wish to visit and how much time you have it is difficult to answer.

We're going to Andalucia this winter, traveling entirely by public transportation.

Ronda, although not a tiny village, is easily accessible by bus from Seville. Arcos has regular bus service, too. You can also reach Grazalema by bus from Ronda.

We've signed up for a one-day tour of the villages (starts/ends in Seville) with Paul McGrath, an Australian who now lives in Seville. He's gotten great reviews. Here are the details: http://theotherspain.galeon.com

I'd rent a car. A very small, narrow car with fold-in mirrors. We drove from Seville through Jerez, Arcos de la Frontera, Zahara, Grazalema, Rhonda, Grenada, and others. It was the best time! We the high road between Zahara and Grazalema which is a narrow, winding road going up and down the mountain in between the two towns. It provided spectacular scenery!

I highly recommend renting a car and taking your time if your itinerary allows.

I was thinking about going to Ronda from Seville, either as a day trip or on my way to Malaga, where I take my return flight back.

It's only 50 miles away but it must be slow, winding, mountain roads or something because viamichelin is indicating a 2 hour drive?

Also from Ronda, you can go down to the coast towards Marbella and then onto Malaga but it's apparently toll roads along the coast?

Arcos de la Frontera is about an hour away from Sevilla too.

What's the parking like in Ronda and smaller towns?

Thank you all for that valuable advise and suggestions. We were thinking about going to Arcos de la Frontera, Ronda, Cueva La Pileta (if not too difficult to get to), Grazalema and Zahara de la Sierra. Not sure whether to go from Seville to Cadiz and then to the white villages or to not worry about Cadiz at all. If any one can suggests any other worthwhile villages please do. We probably stay one night somewhere, probably Ronda, so we don't have to rush The other thing I would like to know is if it is possible to hire a car in Seville and drop in Granada - might be expensive.

another thing do you prebuy your bus tickets in Spain or just buy them on the bus? In some countries you can't buy a ticket on the bus itself which can make it a tat difficult (especially at night) if you are not aware of it.

I would leave out Cadiz and visit the wonderful Grazalema-Zahara region. But if you go to Cadiz, the bus connections to Arcos and Ronda are frequent and convenient.
I most often purchased bus tickets at the counter in the bus station.
I am still not sure about how much time you have--if you want overnight in any of the places you mentioned, you could get to them from Sevilla, and continue on to Granada from them the next day. However, stopping along the way in one day would not work with the schedules (except for maybe Arcos).
Not sure about the rental car drop-off fees, but I'm topping your thread so maybe you'll get an answer. I am thinking it is quite possible.
You could rent a car while in Ronda, and visit Cueva (or get a bus to nearby and walk).

jacks,

We did this same trip; Rented a car through AutoEurope (it was cheap!), picked it up in Seville (where we flew into), stayed two nights in Ronda and dropped car off in Granada (where we flew home from). Absoltely rent a car! Here's my report.

http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...ember-2007.cfm

In particular, it should give you an idea of how much you can squeeze into 10 days (if that is your style). Which turned out to be not as much as we originally planned - we dropped Cadiz early on as 10 nights was a SHORT trip as it turned out...

Thanks Bardo and Yorkshire. have not had time to read the report but it is almost the same kind of thing we want to do so will be reading with interest. See you were there in November how was the weather (this might be in the report).

We have 20 days in Spain(arriving and leaving from madrid) of which we are spending some in Madrid Toledo Segovia, Cordoba, Seville. So we are trying to figure out how long we can spend around the villages etc, Granada maybe Alpujarras and whether we should do some of the coast or opt for Valencia instead. Can't wait for my lunchbreak to read all.

Just finished reading the report (had to extend my lunchbreak) but it was very interesting. I noted that you didn't really spend that much time in the white villages. Do you feel that the two days were enough or can one easily spend another day there? The food sounds great bar the bulls testicles I'll leave that to the gourmet travellers.

Possible would have time than to go to Cadiz and the beach or Valencia. Has anyone any other suggestions for the remaining 3 to 4 days

jacks,

It all depends on how much time you have.

We felt two days in the white villages was about the right ratio for 11 days in Andalusia, but of course there was much we didn't see.

If our trip was longer, we might have seen more. Just do what you can and don't push it - there's always "next time".

Cannot speak to Cadiz or Valencia - many others here will.

Since I feel you must have beautiful beaches where you come from I would also try to see the larger cities near your route. Valencia does have some beautiful historic buildings along with some very impressive contemporary, modern complexes. I am sure a well-planned visit there once you leave Granada would be satisfatory. People are usually quite surprised by how much there is to see and do here.

I would be happy to help you plan a couple days here if need be.

From Valencia you can then stop for coffee at the national parador Alarcón on your way back to Madrid. You could also stop, time permitting, at Alcalá de Henares just east of the airport 30 minutes or so, or if you have already visited Madrid, make this your last night unless you have a horribly early flight out.

Google "castles of Spain", and the UNESCO sites in Spain to help you make decisions of some very interesting stops along the way or with a slight detour.

Hola !

It is possible to go from Sevilla to Ronda (by bus), then to Granada (by train)... you'll see a lot of beautiful villages on the way...but you'll be frustracted because you can't stop ! So renting a car is the best option. If it can help we usually rent cars from www.hispacar.com

Hasta luego,
Jimena

Hi,

It seems renting a car for 7 days (Seville Airport pick up, return Seville) costs the same or less than renting for 4 days (Seville Airport pickup, Granada drop off). So we might keep the car as we visit Granada - but want to park it somewhere, um, safe and cheap for a few days (and not drive it). I've heard the airport has affordable daily parking - is there anywhere else that's easy to get to, cheap-ish parking, and closer to the center of town?

I think we're staying at: Hotel Casa Salvador

Thanks

Hello,

I work for Auto Europe and it is cheaper to rent a car for 4 days than for 7 days.

However, it is a good idea to rent it for longer. Granada is beautiful and you need to spend at least couple of days. Make sure you visit the Alhambra!

Have a look at Auto Europe Car Hire website: www.auto-europe.co.uk

Hi mmarquez,

Am I correct that Auto Europe doesn't allow one to waive the CDW? And do you know of a reasonable place to park a car outside Granada for a few days?

There are a couple of hotels about 2 km out of the city center which has free parking.

I opted for Citymar San Anton hotel, not too far south of the Cathedral. Paid like 50-55 Euro including parking. This was end of last September. My understanding is that rates are cheaper in August in Andalusia because of the heat.

About pileta, check the website: www.cuevadelapileta.org as it is not permanently open.
Though the roads are narrow, they are not very busy. Just take care, we drive on the right, you know.
