On September 1st the high tourist season ends. It is not only in Vienna, but everywhere in Europe. In another message on this forum I read that parents in the US take their kids from school for a few weeks to go on vacation. I was stupefied because here (Europe) this is forbidden.Parents go on vacation when their kids have vacation. Normally school begins in September(it can change a few days from state to state) and ends around June 30th.That is why generally the prices are high in July and August and jump down in september. Or, there must be something special about Vienna that I don't kwow...

Vienna is a most popular city not only for tourists but also for trade fares and important conventions which usually start in September.

If you're that interested, you might find out on Vienna's web page. Some cities do list important events.

Hi Martine
Rest assured, US parents who would keep their children out of school for vacation are a very small minority. Most are only too glad to get them back in class after surviving the summer. And most do not wish their children to miss school unless they are confident they would have a very educational experience. I suspect the jump in hotel prices may be attributed to opening night for the Opera season...which probably translates to no tickets available...but we might have the fun of seeing some very well dressed people.
