Segovia

If I take a commuter train from Madrid to Segovia for a day trip, will I be able to get around the city and explore by myself? I want to avoid the tour groups that do those excursions and do it myself...I speak Spanish so that aspect doesn't worry me, I just don't know how easy it is to get around Segovia. Any advice?

We took a cab from the train station into town - we were staying over night so deposited our luggage and then were able to see everything we wanted to on foot. So I would definitely say it is doable on your own, on foot, after a quick (and cheap) taxi ride from the train station.

the central/historic part of segovia is very compact and easy to see on foot. You will need to take a taxi to the town itself from the train station.
Taking a bus from Madrid is another option.

the classic walk is from the aqueduct, up to the cathedral, ending up at the Alcazar. Really beautiful city.

I also agree that it's very easy to walk around the whole town. I highly recommend Meson de Candido in the Plaza de Azoguejo (at the base of the Roman aquaduct) for lunch or dinner. If you don't mind food on your plate that still resembles the animal it came from then stay away from the cochinillo (roast suckling pig). If that doesn't bother you (and you like pork) then try it, it's superb.

I second the recommendation for Meson de Candido. My husband had the roast suckling pig and I had veal - both were outstanding. Can't miss it - its at the base of the aqueduct.
