Scenic day trips from Edinburgh

Hello all,
I am spending one week in Edinburgh at the end of April. Unfortunately, I do not think I will have time to see any of the Hebrian Islands...I really wanted to go to Isle of Skye!

Can anyone recommend any scenic day trips from Edinburgh? Beautiful lakes or forests?

I loved the Seven Sisters in the south of England...I wonder if there is anything like this near Edinburgh.

I am not much of a hiker but I like to go on long walks through the countryside and small old towns. Thanks.

I was planning on using public transport. I could rent a car if the destination is worth it!

You would need a car for this. But I would reccommend heading north through Linlithgow and Stirling (both places well worth your time also) to the Trossachs. Especially the Lake of Menteith with Inchmahome Priory, on to Duke's Pass. Returning via Callander and Doune. This will take you through enchantingly beautiful scenery and many places where history was made.

East Lothian! Train to North Berwick and enjoy the local area (many good walks, Dirleton Castle, Tantallon Castle, Bass Rock boat trip, Sea Centre) or bus/cycle.walk farther afield.

There is train service to both Linlithgow and Stirling, but,IMO, North Berwick would be an interesting choice.

Thank you, it looks like I shall go to North Berwick. Will look into trains to Linlithgow.

Does anyone know if the castles in N. Berwick are accessible by bus or if everything is in walking distance?

hit post too soon . .

Tantallon is less than 2 miles out of town so an easy walk but there is a bus.

Dirleton is about a mile from the opposite end of town.

If you have a strong stomach for the boat ride and you are a nature lover, Bass Rock is an facinating day trip. You go to the seacoast bird center at North Berwick.

If you are less adventurious and just want to get out a little, take a bus to Rossyln Chapel. It can be done in a morning or afternoon.

I love Fife, but it is difficult to see the whole Neuk without a car. Buses are infrequent.
