Ryan Air

Michael,
I really hate to tell you what everyone tells everyone else, but do a search for Ryan Air (or RyanAir or just Ryan). Anyway, there was a very recent thread about this airline. Make sure the prices you are comparing are, well, comparable. RyanAir tacks on a lot of taxes and other expenses, so the prices may not be that dissimilar. I don't know about Virgin Express.

Hi,

I do not know your routes but bear in mind that Ryanair uses airports that can be a considerable distance from the cities they serve ( ie Brussels Charleroi rather than the main Brussels airport that Virgin Express use and Frankfurt Hahn (50-75 miles? from Frankfurt) although they lay on coaches to meet the flights so the additional time from/to the airports is a factor. On the other hand it is quicker to leave the airports that ryanair use.
If you travel if Ryanair I would suggest you take out travel insurance to cover any delays as there have been a few stories about Ryanair not providing any assistance in the event of aeverely delayed flight. ( They do advertise this fact and I never travel overseas without insurance)

Not all of Ryan's flights are from remote locations. I flew Edinburgh to Dublin a couple of weeks ago for around 20 GBP. Great flight on a rainy, windy, day (both ways), easy boarding for an airline that doesn't allow reserve seating (in the UK they really know how to queue!). I'll take them again.

We've used Ryanair, and it's a European version of Southwest Airlines - no frills, so if cost is a consideration, then it's the way to go.

As others have said, determine departure and arrival terminals. If time is a consideration as well, and the airports are a long way from your final destination, it might be worth the extra $45 to be at a closer airport.

We arrived late one time, and Ryanair personnel went above and beyond the call of duty to get us on the plane. The flight might be no frills, but the employees certainly didn't act like it.

Check their fares with other airlines, like BA and Virgin. It can sometimes be cheaper (or more convenient).Ryanair do not include all taxes etc, in their avertised price and sometimes you cannot get the 'special' prices. This was the subject of a consumer programme in the UK. It can mislead people. They fly to off beat airports and some people have been stranded in Europe as there was only one flight back to ukl and it was full. If you do your homework you may get a deal, but don't take anything for granted.

I just booked Ryan last week for September flight Edinburgh to Dublin for a grand total of 10 pounds 90 per person plus taxes, so the total for two was like 40 pounds or so. Pretty darn cheap I think, since the major lines were wanting at least 150 to 200 pounds for the same flights. If I would have booked a day earlier the cost was a special of ONE pound 90, but I delayed for one day and it went up to 10....oh well still a bargain I say
