Rome Underground---Why no answers???
A couple of days ago I posted an inquiry about the tours that go underground in Rome. No one has responded. Trying one more time. Possibly this means no one has done that. That's hard for me to imagine with the group here. If it's because you didn't enjoy it I would love to know why.

Thanks again for your comments.

Guy,
This may not be what you are trying to find, bit I ran across it the other day on www.about.com.
It is called Nero's Golden Palace, just reopened last yr.
It seems to be underground.
To find out more go to the site, go to travel, then italy travel.
There is a piece on 11 ways to stay cool.
It is #4 or 5, and it does not seem to be the catacombs only they mention.
Hope this helps.
Nancy

Hi, guy! I have not done an Underground Rome tour (sorry), but I am headed to Italy on Friday. In the process of researching, I ran across these sites. For info on tours, try http://www.romeguide.it/FrameSeting.html, click City Tours, click Rome Underground Tours. Info is OK; I haven't found anything on underground tours from a tour company that I think is really great (like Scala Reale).
For an article about underground Rome (a little outdated, but fascinating and with a few Underground Tour companies listed towards the end), try http://www.TheAtlantic.com/issues/97apr/rome.htm. Enjoy and good luck!!

Check out the Europe Through the Back Door site (ricksteves.com). There was recently an article about the catacombs there that was very interesting. It was a month or two ago, I believe. Good luck. You also might try a www search for the "Catacombs of Rome"

Last year in Rome, we went to two underground sites. The first was Nero's Golden House (Domus Aurea), which is just across the road from the Colosseum. You have to pre-book tickets for a guided tour (it's the only way they let you go in), which are ITL 12,000 each (with boooking fee). The tour is about 45 minutes, and I recommend renting the English language tape, as the guides only speak Italian! The web site is <http://www.romeguide.it/domus_aureae..._aurea.htm>. You can fax, e-mail or call them from the US (I called & charged the tickets, and they were waiting for me). You must tell them the date and time you wish to visit (best to go earlier in the day). It's damp inside, and a bit clammy.

The other site is the "Uffici Scavi". This is the 1st Century necropolis, and tomb of St. Peter, which are located directly beneath the Vatican. You have to e-mail the Vatican for a reservation. The web site for complete information is <http://twenj.com/romevatican.htm#necropolis>. Be sure to ask for a tour in English!

I highly recommend the Scavi tour. We enjoyed this one tremendously. Our guide was an art historian who had worked down in the scavi for years, and spoke fluent English. She really knew her way around down there.

When I was in Rome a few years ago, I went to the Vatican catacombs, which were interesting. But the most interesting ones were on the outskirts of the city. They were still in the city, but on the edge. It is very beautiful and very errie. They have a small church there (if I remember correctly) and they are advertised throughout Rome. I'm sorry I can't remember the name, but I think you will be able to find them nonetheless.
I just got back from Rome and took a short tour of the catacombs there. I found them to be interesting, but the tour was a bit hurried and there was part of it that was blocked off for excavation. The good news is that there is a "walk and ride" service in the city for this year that takes you out there. Good luck.
