Hi fellow fodorites!

I have a question about the Spagna meto. I'm considering Hotel Parlamento, which is located just off via del Corso. The closest metro stop would be near the Spanish steps.
There's another hotel I'm looking at (Nicolas Inn or Hotel Paba) and it's off via Cavour (very close to two metro stops, about a .2 mile walk).

Am I correct that the Spagna metro is accessible from the top side, rather than where the spanish steps is located?

Hotel Parlamento is by far the best located of the three. Stop thinking Metro - Rome is unique. Unlike every other major city in the world, in Rome being close to Metro doesn't equal well located.

In Rome the Metro skirts AROUND the center instead of going through it. There's no comparable Chatelet, Times Square, Picaddily or Metro Center in Rome.

The most central and convenient area in Rome is the area west of Via del Corso all the way to the river (with the Pantheon being the epicenter) - an area devoid of any Metro stops (due to archeological concerns/issues discovered when the Metro system in Rome was first built.

From the Hotel Parlamento you'll be able to walk most everywhere.

the metro is mainly useful for getting to more outlying areas of Rome, rather than exploring the centre.

in the centre you need stout shoes and bus tickets.

Yes, you can exit up via a long series of escalators all the way up to Via Veneto. Follow the directions underground for the exit you want.

The exit from the Cavour stop has a flight of stairs. The entrance to the Cavour stop (you cannot get between the entrance/exits underground) is a street level below Cavour on the Via Leonina side where Via Urbana branches off.

What's more beneficial for public transport in either location are the small electric bus lines that run through the historic center. 116 runs from near the Vatican up to the Borghese Galleria (and through the park). The 117 runs from Piazza del Popolo to Piazza S. Giovanni in Laterno (with stops at Cavour). These buses are very frequent and convenient. Here's a map.

I'm thinking metro simply because I'm taking the Leonardo express train and then metro-ing over to the hotel. I'm doing a day trip to Orvieto and that train departs at 8:25am so I need quick access.

I've decided on Parlamento. I was there in 2010. I have Paba on my list because of good reviews plus 15 euros less expensive per night than Parlamento, although that's really not a biggie. Just an idea to try another hotel out. I should just stick with what I know.

Postive points for Parlamento is easy access via walking at the 116 mini bus that goes right by the hotel (if I decide to use it to get to Trastevere or the Borghese gallery. But I do most of my traveling on foot. Plus I'll be closer to restaurants I want to go to.

This was another hotel that's on my list: Hotel della Torre Argentina Roma. Very close to Campo dei Fiori.

I've stayed at the della Torre Argentina. Excellent location, and buses stop right out in front.

hello
never been to Rome so I need a VERY centrally located hotel wherein I can essentially walk about as that is how most seem to get about to sightsee Rome..need suggestions for those who are well-travelled in Rome.

I know you've visited Rome several times, but is this a first visit to Orvieto? We stayed 3 nts in Orvieto and just loved it. Spent quite a bit of time seeing everything in and around, then doing day trips out from Orvieto via car.

Let me know if you want some suggestions for less familiar things in Orvieto!
