If I have only 1 and 1/2 days to spend in Rome, what must I be sure to see ? ? ?

I just got back from Rome last night and have to answer that same question for a woman in my office. <BR> <BR>We saw all the sights in Rome and I am going to recommend to her to be sure she does not miss St Peters and The Vatican. You can;t go to Rome and NOT see St Peters and the Sistine ceiling. I'll also tell her to walk through the forum and see the Colosseum. <BR> <BR>If you do St Peters, Vatican and the Ancient City do yourself a favor and go with a tour guide. We had a phenomenal guide who really made them both come alive for us. We would have been totally lost in what we were seeing without her. Rome is fairly compact so getting from one place to another isn't too bad. The Pantheon, Navona, Campo dei Fiori are very near each other. Those are nice to see in the evening. There are also tons of restaurants around there. The Vatican Museum/Sistine Chapel is great but mobbed. If you don't want to feel rushed or overwelmed, you may want to head straight for the Sistine Chapel and consider making a reservation at Borghese Gallery. The Borghese is wonderful and the crowds are limited. A visit there takes about 2 hours and is very worthwhile. The space is incredible. Just remember to call in advance for a reservation. I believe you can even do it online.

Many would probably use it spend more time at the Vatican Museums. I'd probably use an extra half day to explore the Roman Forum and Palatine.

I second Leslie's list, and would add three more: Campo di Fiori, Piazza del Popolo, and Trastevere.
