Resturaunts in Paris -- We need some help

My wife and I have been to Paris many times, both as a couple and seperately before we were married. We're going again in a few weeks. She tells me that she's never had a really great meal in Paris. I told her, promised her, that we are going to eat well this trip.

Here's the catch. She doesn't eat meat or chicken. She'll eat fish.

So, she hasn't had a great meal because she's always eatern in either ethnic resturaunts in Paris or in the few vegetarian resturaunts. Neither of which are great in Paris (in her/our experience).

We've eaten falafael in the Marais and pizza and cheese and baguettes and all that which we love and will eat more of but I want to take her to some good resturaunts with menus that offer good food she can eat. Something that will change her opinion of Parisian resturaunts.

I've heard the resturaunt Fish is supposed to be great and we'll go there for sure.

I'm wondering if anyone can suggest other places we should try or let me know about any awesome non-meat/chicken meals you might have had.

Thanks so much.

Au Petit Marguery, in the 13th, has fish dishes--but by far the most wonderful comes only in the fall and winter, sautéed fresh wood mushrooms, done with a hint of garlic and parsley. Absolutely fabulous.

Most French restaurants do excellent things with fish (and shellfish). Does your friend eat mussels? If so, she'll be in seventh heaven, as moules frites (mussels in a broth with fries on the side) is a classic French dish. Scallops can usually be found, and in good restaurants they can be extraordinarily delicious.

You could go to Le Dôme, which specializes in fresh fish and shellfish.

SDA, I haven't been here in years but this was first time in a great Fish restaurant that wasn't a brasserie. I was awed. Like your wife, I prefer fish.

L'Arpege, on the rue de Varenne in the 7th, is a Michelin 3 star restaurant which is vegetarian.

Thanks for all the great suggestions.

Could you give me a general direction/location for Gaya and La Marée as well as for Le Dôme?

Thanks! Any other suggestions would be great too.

We like Jacque Cagna's , Le Espadon Bleu on rue de Grand Augustins for wonderful fresh fish.

You'll find some fish on Fish's menu but they really don't specialise in it..the name comes from the location having been a fish market in a previous exsistence and Poissonerie was written across the front of the building in beautiful tiles..so they changed the P with a B, since they are mainly a wine bar with food.

Hi Jody,

Thanks for the resturaunt suggestion and the info on Fish. I didn't realize it was a wine bar. That's good too but I thought it was a seafood place. Have you eaten there and do you recommend the food?

Isn't Prunier the classic Parisian seafood place?

The classic seafood restaurant in Paris, in my opinion, is Goumard, 9 rue Duphot, near the Madeline metro station. Only one meat dish is listed on the menu. Quite reasonable, for a Michelin one star.

Yes . we've eaten there twice. Both times the food was quite good, not exceptional but definitely good. The wine selections by the glass are well priced and varied. They also have a big selection of single malts too if you're interested!!

Where is my mind! I forgot about Christian Constant's new place in the 7th on rue Dominique,Les Fables de la Fontaine.. we have it on our list for our Oct. trip. We meant to go last Oct but we had too many places for too few days! It's been getting really good reviews. I know some posters here have been , maybe they'll respond.

SDA--

Fish is fabulous--I highly recommend it. My husband and I just came back from Paris and this is our new second favorite restaurant. Definitely make reservations because it's packed every night.

You might also want to try my absolute favorite---Fellini. It's in the 1st near the Louvre. I almost hate to write about it because it's kind of our secret find. No one on this website ever talks about this restaurant. About 6 years ago we were staying at the FS George V but we wanted a casual place where we didn't have to dress up. The concierge recommended this restaurant and we've gone back every single year. Here's the details along with a recent Zagat review. Lots of fish entrees on menu. You won't find nicer waiters anywhere in Paris and the food w/GREAT service!!

Fellini
47, rue de l'Arbre-Sec
Paris, France
01 42 60 90 66

Zagat:
Spearheaded by “good-humored”, “personable service”, a “warmly welcoming atmosphere” pervades this pair of pasta purveyors in the 1st (with “mellow stone walls”) and 15th; patrons also are “pleased” by the “appetizing plats” and the “well-selected list of wines from the other side of the Alps (i.e. The Boot)”; some say it seems “a little expensive” for spaghetti, but most shrug “that’s the price you pay” for “a trip to Italy in the course of an evening.”

Bon Appetite!

I think you did...it has great reviews and Christian Constant or his wife are always hopping in and out..I really want to do one of his cooking classes someday. I think St Cirq has done it, she posted something awhile ago about it.

Thanks to everyone for the great ideas and suggestions. We will eat well this trip!

Here is what I'm thinking for our first three nights:

1. Fish - have only heard good things about it. Looking forward to giving it a try. I hope we can make reservations for the same day as I'd like to go there our first night in town.

2. Fellini - haven't heard of this place until ILUVPARIS recommended it but sounds right up our alley. We were thinking about a quick trip to Florence this time around but are not able to do it. So, some good Italian food might be the next best thing.

3. Les Fables de la Fontaine - for some good fish/seafood. Anyone know the price range on the menus here?

Any other ideas and suggestions would be great. I'm always open to revising and expanding the plan.

Thanks again!

3.

I had the best grilled salmon I have ever eaten at Au Pied de Cochon, 6 rue Coquilliere,Tel; +33-0-1 40 13 77 00.
The service was first rate and I thought they paid as much attention to me (eating alone) as they did to larger tables.

My best meal in Paris without a doubt was at L'Aguiere, 37bis Rue Montreuil, Tel 01 43 72 42 32. They have something wonderful for every palate!
Be prepared for a rather large bill but a big smile on your face after dinner.
