Restaurant near Trevi

Some things are just perfect, and celebrating my 40th at my favorite fountain comes REAL close. Now I just need recommendations for the ideal, classic Italian restaurant. Nothing pretentious...just everything authentic. Any suggestions?

I love Rome too and will return in October. One of the best books about
expatriate life in Italy is Alan Epstein's "As the Romans Do". He mentions a restaurant close to the Trevi
Fountain, Piccolo Arancia, Vicolo
Scanderberg 112. If you don't want to
buy the book, he has a website with
restaurant and cafe recommendations. He
also offers his services as a guide.

Hi Jeanne,

My husband and I were in Rome in May 2002 for a week and we ate at both Piccolo Arancia (dinner) and Vicolo Scanderberg (lunch).

At Piccolo Arancia my husband had a dish of fried seafood (whole fish, whole baby octopus, etc.) and I had a pasta with swordfish sauce. Pretty good, very subtle flavors, indifferent staff, but nothing outstanding.

At Vicolo Scanderberg, my husband had a spicy seafood (octopus, fish) with beans and tomato sauce dish (I think it was a type of stew). I had the gnocchi with sundried tomatoes and porcini mushrooms. The food here was very filling with lots of flavor. Don't get the house white wine though. It was terrible.

If I were to choose between the two, I would pick Vicolo Scanderberg.

Hope you have a great time in Rome! I know I did!
Windy

We went to a restaurant called Taverna steps from Trevi. It was low keyed and funky. It had long wooden tables I assume it's called "family style". The cool thing was everyone eating there was Italian.

The best restaurant we at was about 10 minutes from the Fountain. Actually right in front of the Pantheon.

I forget the name but with you back to the front of the Pantheon walk about 100 yards straight ahead and just to the right. It's on the right side.

It was full of locals. Well dressed. Business after work type. Was full until almost 11PM.

Very good and not overly expensive.
