Request for Recommendation

This year is one of those "milestone" birthdays and I'm planning a vacation to celebrate. We are planning one week in early August and were considering Italy. Understanding you can only see so much in 1 week, I was considering focusing on Venice, although some think Florence might be a better choice. I'd like to spend part of the time in the city, but part of the time in some rural areas (more relaxing). Any suggestions or recommendations on itinerary and lodging?

Chris - Venice is unforgettable. I have not done Florence, Tuscany, and Cinqueterra yet but am planning this spring. I personally would spend two nights in Venice and then make my way to Florence with Tuscany and Cinqueterra nearby for an overnight stay.

A week in Venice is too long: the city is just too touristy to enjoy a full week there.<BR>My favourite Italian city is Siena. Stay in Siena, rent a car, and do day-trips to Florence, Volterra, San Gimignano, Pisa and Lucca. Lots of rural areas in-between these cities.

Chris, Many restaurants, etc. close after Aug. 15 in Italy. That said, I would go to Lake Como, Bellagio, Varenna, etc. where it will be lovely and cooler. Venice is very close and you could spend a couple of days there as well.

I would do Verona and Venice (1 1/2 hours apart by train). If you have time and the inclination, check out the Lake Garda area aound Verona or travel south from Venice down the Adriatic coast, stopping at an area (you won't have time for more) that interests you. (Identify it in advance & make a reservation as it IS major vacation time). After all, if you are travelling in the big August vacation month, take advantage of what is going on at that time. Verona's Arena Festival is in July & August. Beaches are alive & full of activity. Each town has things of interest to see & do, though perhaps not on the scale of the big cities. Have fun!
