Hi Lorac, StCirq and others!

I would like to know more about the troglodyte caves around SAUMUR in the Loire.

Lorac 1127 had mentioned touring the caves and sampling wine, mushrooms, etc., there Lorac, did you join an organized tour of these caves, or did you just drive around and stop off at whatever cave looked interesting?

Did you like the wines available there? What kind of wine did they have?

Also, have either of you --or anyone else-- eaten at the cave restaurant LES CAVES de MARSON? Would you recommend it, or did it just seem more of a novelty?

I'm trying to decide whether to make the drive to SAUMUR from Chenonceau in June. The caves sounded intriguing.

Hi, betty:

It's been a few years since my last trip through the Loire, but we did stay in Saumur and did visit caves and did eat at the Caves de Marson.

About the caves - being a part-time denizen of the Dordogne, I have pretty high cave standards, and the troglodyte caves in the Loire just don't carry as much clout as the chromatic prehistoric ones.That said, the caves in Dénézé-sous-Doué, with the hundreds of figures carved by 16th-century Protestant stonemasons were unique and interesting, and the museum at Rochemenier that was a former troglodyte farming community certainly captured my attention.

We used the Eyewitness Giode to the Loire and followed most of its recommended Troglodyte tour.

I don't recall sampling food or wine at any of the troglodyte caves, though we definitely sampled wines at various dégustation stands and stores throughout the region. Whenever you sample wine, it will be very regional, probably grown down the road. I like the red Chinons and some of the Vouvrays, but I'm not much of a white wine drinker, so my wine interests are concentrated in other areas of France.

We had a delicious meal at the Caves de Marson, but it's really not a place that's about the food. If I recall correctly, we had to make reservations in advance because of its popularity.
