That's awesome, PJI. Thank you so much!

Iowa, Wisconsin and Connecticut will go in the mail this afternoon with Germany and Luxembourg to follow in November. I hope school is going well and that your students are enjoying your project!

Thanks, MVOR. This project, thanks to people like you, has taken off! It's already turned out better than I imagined.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I'm still working on this for next year, so if anyone's headed to less well-travelled spots, especially in E. Europe, let me know!

The kids really enjoyed looking at the map, the postcards and we even made a sort of relay race game of finding countries. It worked! Just need cards for those missing countries :)

Thanks for topping, OWJ - I didn't see Kaliningrad on your list. My DS and DIL are heading there in October, if you're interested. They'll also be in Warsaw.

Would you like city cards or just country cards? I'll be in Dresden and Berlin in a couple weeks, as well as a few out of the way places in Switzerland. This sounds very cool. I'd love to help contribute!

My goal is to get one postcard/country
(I learned last year that I don't have enough room to really fit more than one.)

It doesn't matter if the card features a city or country but the kids get more out of it if it depicts something that place is known for or something unique. For instance, someone sent me a postcard made of cork from Portugal. The kids really liked that one because it was different. They also loved the silly ones like the gigantic potato sitting on top of a car from Idaho. (Thanks, Tiff for that one!)

I wish we could edit after posting...I meant I only have room for one card/European or S. American country due to space on my world map...I am trying to get cards from all 50 US states because that's a separate map.

Would they like one of a marmot drinking beer? We've got an extra from Zell am See, Austria.

A long time ago when my aunt was a teacher she wrote to the tourist board of different countries and got some really nice brochures and other information to decorate her classroom.

Do you need one from Croatia? I'm headed to Greece in the fall. Do you need one from there? I can even send it from Greece!

OWJ...what a great idea!

I will be going to Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro in September. If you still need any of these places I'd be happy to send them to you if you can wait until I get back at the end of September to send them to you. :-D

I didn't realize this post started last year but I emailed you for the address in case you want a card from the US Virgin Islands.

That's me! I'm happy to know kids liked it. I bought it when I visited Lisbon for the first time, nearly 20 years ago. I included it in the letter because it was so different from the usual paper card.

Nice to find this thread again.

How about Cornwall? Will e-mail now.

OneWanderingJew Jul 9th, 2006 02:19 PM

Hi Kappa!
Yes, the kids really loved that card!!! One boy in particular wanted to handle it so often, I was worried it would fall apart. Of all my students, I think he was the kid who most loved the project b/c Alex would come in many mornings and tell me something about a place we received a postcard from--and most days he'd tease me that he was moving there :)

The project is on-going...there are a lot of countries that still don't have a postcard connected to them. What I did was mount a large map to the wall and surrounded it with all the cards. I then used yarn to connect the postcards to their place of origin.

OWJ, thanks for updating us. I hope your map fills up fast!

OneWanderingJew Jul 9th, 2006 06:07 PM

Thanks, mvor...Your book came in handy when we did our countries projects :)

If I remember correctly (help, Ira!),
"Roger wilco" is one term used by American military pilots. Watch for it in WWII movies.

annhig Jul 12th, 2006 09:23 AM

Not sure it was restricted to US pilots - see "Reach for the Skies" etc. Or did we borrow it?
