Postcards for a teacher

Hi all,
Another school year is about to begin and I was trying to come up with something new for my bulletin board. I teach special ed.--lang. arts, reading and social studies--so I was thinking it would be very meaningful if I could hang postcards from the regions of the world that we learn about.

I have a dozen or so postcards but that's not enough. My 6th graders will learn about the following places:
Europe, including Russia
N. America
S. America
Oceania

I don't want bags of postcards coming to my school but would like a really a cool classroom.

Thanks in advance!
OWJ

I don't feel comfortable just posting my address on the web, so email me at [email protected] and I will be happy to give you the snailmail address.

Thanks again!

Hi one,

If you posted the address of the school, we could send them there.

Ira, I was kind of uncomfortable even giving my work address so if you wouldn't mind emailing me, I'll give it to you offline. I think this way, it won't turn into some flood of postcards :)

Just thought I'd remind you of Google Images. I've found many useful things for my classroom with it.

Keep in mind that most images on the net are copyrighted.

cmt Jul 31st, 2005 09:19 AM

What does the "wilco one" message mean?

Printing out a single copy of a copyrighted image to post on a classroom bulletin board would probably be considered "fair use."

Would you like postcards ordinary places in the US, too? If so, I'll e-mail you.

I, of course, am no lawyer, but my understanding is that even copywighted items can be used by educators in a not for profit situation....

socialworker Jul 31st, 2005 10:24 AM

Ooops!! Looks like Elmer Fudd posted using my name!! :)

socialworker, you are correct in your understanding -- By the way, I <i>like Elmer Fudd :D</i>

CMT--My goal is to represent each US state, Canadian province and territory and the countries the kids will learn about. The kids will be familiar with bigger cities but maybe it would be good for the to know that Illinois is more than Chicago, for example....soooo, if you would like to help me out, I'd be very appreciative.

Thanks!
OWJ

cmt, I think Ira was using shortening the phrase &quot;roger wilco,&quot; the source of which I am not familiar with, but it means OK.

Hey folks!
It looks like I have postcards from Italy, German, France and Russia coming but the rest of Europe won't be represented. Is anyone in Fodorsville going or living in other European nations? We don't get started on our Europe unit til late Nov. so your postcard would still be meaningful if you sent it out in the fall or even early winter.

Thanks for helping!
OWJ

OWJ, I have postcards from England, Scotland, Germany too. I'll send them to you.

Thanks, STW. You're the best!

Hi. Re the fair use of web images, there are good guidelines for teachers online. It is more complicated than just &quot;not for profit&quot;. It has to do with the profit of the copyright holder. In other words, we cannot copy and print an artwork for bulletin board display if it is for sale as a reproduction by a museum etc., or a photograph that has commercial value for the photographer. I think we can print it at a very small scale and use it one time (ie. for one lesson). Makes your head spin, but some school districts (mine included) are very sensitive to this whole issue.

Sorry for digressing, OWJ, with stuff you probably already know. I owe you at least one card and will e- today. J.

For the european ones is it just the postcard/photo that is of interest or the international mailing/stamp? Just wondering if I should put a few in an envelope or send them separately..
