Positano Info
With great advice from Fodorites, we've decided to stay in Positano for a week. Still trying to decide on the best apartment for us.
I still don't seem to have a full sense of the geography of the town. I know it's hilly. I'm guessing that the hotels/villas that you need to climb a lot of stairs to get to have the best views...???
Any comments on Fornillo, Nocelle, Montepertuso (?) - are they too out of the way, or a nice break?
Any comments on which parts of town are noisier, busier, etc.?
We certainly want to be close to things - public transportation, shops, restaurants, etc., - but certainly don't mind walking a bit more to enjoy what the area really has to offer.
Thanks again!

Hi trav,
Positano is pretty much vertical. If you go to www.google.com, enter "Positano", and click on "images", you will see how it is arranged.

trav,
Montepertuso is about 15 min by car from Positano. You could have a wonderful lunch at any of the restaurants there ( IL RITROVO, DONNA ROSA, and others), then hike back down if your physically fit from the trail that snakes down in back of the church on the main square. Otherwise, take a cab!!
Or, go for dinner and enjoy the incredible views at sunset.
Have a great time. It's magical.

We stayed at the Villa Reale and it was wonderful. The owners live right there and you feel like family. 65 steps to the villa from the street and 8 flights of steps from there down to town.
It was positively beautiful and we could take boat rides to Sorrento, Amalfi, Capri. We loved it and although we did not regret our week there decided in a week the steps got old fast and would try another location
next time.

travelfly, we went through the same thought process as you when we booked our Positano vacation several weeks ago. We came to the conclusion that Nocelle and Montepertuso were nice places to visit, but you want to stay in Positano (or alternately, in Praiano).
We booked this place for a week in June:

It's fairly well up the hill, but we have sturdy legs. I may come to regret the steps, but probably not the view!

You're better off basing in Positano. I can't comment on the other two towns, but Montepertuso is a mountain village perched above Positano, which makes it difficult to get back and forth to anyplace else. I don't think it has SITA bus service much past the early evening. Also town is a handful of streets, a church, and a couple of restaurants.
