Poland-need help
Traveling to Poland, Warsaw, nest month, 2 weeks, for the first time anyone have pointers where to stay and what would be the best thing to do regarding sightseeing?? Also, hotel accomodations heard the university has a program that you can stay there when they have extra rooms not sold to local businesses for the summer.

mission: I have not been to Poland, but I have done pretty extensive research for my upcoming September trip. Over a six month period, I found just three people that had been there and had pertinent info to offer beyond Krakow, Zakopane and Warsaw. Hopefully, one of them will see this post and provide you with some information (this response effectively "tops" your post). If no one answers, I will share the information I have developed.
This is, primarily, an Italy, France, England, Ireland, Scotland board. However, enter "poland" in the search box above and you will get what has been offered in the past. Good luck.

We returned last week from a 4 day stay in Warsaw and 3 in Krakow. I did not like Warsaw - just a city with nothing special about it.Stayed in the Sheraton which was a £50 pppn job. Got ripped off by most taxi drivers who all set their meters high! Restaurants were mostly good. Not many sightseeing options out of town. Return train journey to Krakow was £20-first class and took 2hours.30mins.A wonderful place rather olde worlde with all modern conveniences at the same time. We stayed at the Pollera hotel -great location near the town square. It cost £24pppn .Excellent value for money.Clean old fashioned rooms-all en suite. Plenty sightseeing .You can hire a taxi cheaply too.
Enjoy!

msison - I agree that most posters on this site are mostly interested in France, Italy, and UK + Ireland, But there have been many helpful posts regarding Poland. I agree with carylspall that Warsaw is not a particularly attractive city and I would plan to spend only 2 full days there. From there you have 2 choices either go north and west to visit Gdansk and Marlbork Castle, Torun and Poznan - or South to Kazimierze-Dolny, Krakow (Auschwitz), Lublin, Zamosc, Wroclaw, and/or Zakopane. Given 2 weeks you ought to be able to do the southern route (but not both) provided you don't waste too much time in Warsaw. Let us know your proposed itinerary and we will try to help you out.

You might also try looking at the Thorn Tree message boards on Lonely Planet and Virtual Tourist where there are plenty of people from Poland and that have been to Poland.
I've recently been to Warsaw and Krakow with side trips to Auschwitz and the salt mines. If you're going to be in Poland for 2 weeks, give Warsaw only 2-3 days and then head to other parts as has been suggested. Krakow is a delightful city and you can spend several days there plus a couple doing day trips.
Trains were easy to use in Poland and relatively inexpensive.
Warsaw is not as attractive or touristy as Krakow but there are interesting things to see-the old town square, the Royal Castle, Lazienki Palace, Wilanow, the Palace of Culture.
