Poland - What gifts are popular from there?

My husband is on his way to Poland is I write this - He asked what he can bring back for me. I have no idea. Any suggestions.
He will be in Warsaw for the most part.
Are ceramics big there? I love Herend, but I know that is from Hungary. Anything similar?
Thanks........

If you like amber, that's the place to get it.

I'm not an authority on this, but I don't know of a popular brand of fine Polish china; there must be some. They do export rustic folk-type pottery that is very attractive; you could probably go to Williams-Sonoma website and see something that would give you an idea of what it looks like; I know from time to time they sell baking dishes. We have a couple of places here in Pgh. that sell imported Polish ceramics; they make nice accent pieces if you don't want a whole set, for example, since what I've seen is rather ornate.

Grandmere is right about the amber--very nice and lots of it. Also, the crystal is excellent and inexpensive. I don't remember seeing any Herend but I was in Krakow/Zakopane and not Warsaw.

CPLIA or CEPELIA offer Polish craft items. One shop is near Marriott in Warsaw. Polish glassware is beautiful and useable. Certainly amber and silver jewelery is another choice. It will travel safely. The 'stare miasto' in Old Town offers good art. Be choosy! Most can be rolled up for travel. Frame at home. Our best received gifts were sheepskin rugs. They also pack well. There are many art outlets with world class merchandise. How much do you want to spend. The Polish Post Office will safely deliver merchandise that is too much trouble to carry. Get receipts. Woven rugs, an after thought!

If he's going to do the crystal thing have him check it in terms of the lead content...if he can get 33% that's about as good as it gets.

I bought two carved figures in the market hall in Krakow. They are of old Jewish men one with a violin and another with a cello/double bass. They are about 12-18" high each and have attracted much admiration. Also sold in abundance there was amber to include the cloudy yellow one - I think it may be called"custard" amber. I'm still sorry I didn't buy any of this.

Pottery from Boleslawiec is charming; amber and silver jewellery is everywhere and there are some gorgeous peices available; crystal and cut glass (useful as in bowls and vases, or ornamental pieces); Christmas ornaments.

Avoid Cepelia - it's a tourist trap.

NYCFoodSnob - you must have been hungry to come up with a daft answer like that.

I would add to this list hand embroidered table linens - ask him for a table cloth and napkins but make sure to have him check for size because tables in Poland tend to be smaller than in US.

I meant to put a smiley face but I forgot. Actually, a friend mentioned he had kielbasa and eggs recently for breakfast and I remembered how much I love that dish. The Poles really do make great kielbasa. If the government would let me, I wouldn't hesitate to bring some back with me.

Thank youfor the responces...It appears amber is the big thing. I am not sure I am an amber fan.
Christmas ornaments sounds like a safe bet. Beautiful crystal items sound good too!!

Thanks again........
