Planned Strike By RMT Trade Union Set to begin Friday 21 July at 12 Noon
How is this going to affect travel between London and Liverpool on Friday and Saturday?
My son is going to the British Open (as a spectator) on Saturday. Will he get there?
Do any trains run at all or is everything shut down?

I'm supposed to be travelling to a friend's wedding in London on Saturday. It sounds like there will be big transport problems for everybody on Friday afternoon and Saturday.
The best thing is to keep checking on www.nationalrail.co.uk which has all the updates and timetable changes for the lines affected by the strike.

It's hard to tell if the union would go ahead with the strike or they avoid it at the last minute. The train companies usually try to maintain "limited" service.
Two alternatives: (1) your son can leave Friday morning, or (2) he can take a National Express coach--though it would take much longer, probably abour 5 hrs.

Most train companies are hoping to run limited services. Look at their web sites and see how the situation evolves. If possible, try to travel before or after the strike which is from noon on Friday to noon on Saturday. It's normally a very busy time as people go away for weekends, as well as being the start of the peak holiday season.

W9, unfortunately I'd arranged to visit a friend in Portsmouth (coming from Brussels) on Friday and then travelling back to London for the wedding on Sat. I'm sure we'll find a train or bus or something, but it sure makes our plans more complicated... especially since the Northern line to Highgate is out of action on Saturday and guess where the the wedding is!! Grr.

Train services between Liverpool and London on Saturdays are pretty awful at the best of times, with average timings of 3.5 hours for the evening services: the trains were faster in 1967, but then that was before Richard Branson did his Midas in Reverse trick on them.
And few people on this board will disagree that, if there's a strike on anywhere, workers around Liverpool are more likely than most to join in.
There'll be no point, unless the srike's called off, checking on revised timetables - because no-one will know till a train actually arrives at its destination how messed up it's going to be. And even when there isn't a strike, Branson's record for arbitrary cancellations on this route stands supreme.
To add to the fun, the planes are few and pricey.
I'd hire a car. If he's iffy about driving on the proper side, hire at Heathrow. Least stressful going M40, M42, M6 toll, M6, M56, M53.
