Places to visits near Porto

We are going to Porto for a short midweek break in may. Can anyone suggest some places to visits from Porto which does not involve more than say 1 hours travelling by public transport.each way. Thank You.

I loved Guimares and Braga - research those gems about an hour or so from Porto - Coimbra is a larger town with a sweet upper city with lovely old university buildings - check www.budgeteuropetravel.com and their online European Planning & Rail Guide Portugal section for more options easily reachable by train or bus in that area - like perhaps Batalha and its UNESCO World Heritage Site monastery.

those are just a few that I went to.

You could head inland by boat on the Douro River to see the vineyards.

Another vote for Guimaraes- we spent a night there last May & loved it; would definitely return. Also found Coimbra fascinating & charming although much bigger than Guimaraes- not sure about getting there in an hour by public transportation as we had a car & went from Coimbra (1 night) to Guimaraes (1 night) to Porto (2 nights). Missed the Douro Valley but would definitely suggest it based on reputation & certainly within easy distance of Porto.

Guimares would be my first choice - be sure to see the monastery (?) pilgrimage site with those steep stairs I saw folks navigating on their knees!
