Places to stay in Amsterdam Oct, 2017

Been looking for places to stay for 3 nights in October in Amsterdam for me and my husband. I have looked on airbnb and booking.com
Has anyone stayed at The Muse Hotel in the museum area? I am looking to spend between $500 and $600. I would appreciate your recommendations. Ticadonnita

Not stayed but the Museum area would be my top choice of areas to stay in -well out of the tourist hubbub in more central Amsterdam but walkable to just about everyplace with trams going everywhere too.

Look at the Ambassade http://ambassade-hotel.nl/, especially one of their superior canal view rooms. We loved being in the middle of Amsterdam- restaurants, bars, and the view. Nothing is far away...

is that $500-$600 per night or $600-ish total for 3 nights?

That would be $200 a night maximum. Thank you for your replies. I definitely do not want to stay in the center. That is the reason I was looking at museum area.

You might be interested in the Plantage area too. And I stayed in Volkshotel on Wibautstraat a couple of weeks ago: well below your budget, very tasteful rooms in a Berlin chic kind of way and a nice vibe. Fantastic transport to the centre: it's nearly on top of the Wibautstraat metro stop: from there to Nieuwmarkt: 5 minutes. And frequent trains, well into the night.

Thank you Menachem. The hotel looks great, but they are booked for the dates I want, Oct. 17-20. I even looked on the website in addition to booking.com , etc.
Have you ever taken a train from Copenhagen to Amersterdam?
We are now looking at getting there by train or plane.

We stayed at Amsterdam At Home in October 2016 for 5 nights and loved it. Wonderful location but quite quiet.

We stayed in the larger apartment upstairs but got a look at the basement apartment and it was also lovely. It wasn't truly underground - it was more of part-way between street level and beneath. Plenty of natural light.

Just noticed that the unit we stayed in with Amsterdam at Home (the one directly above the one still on their website) isn't on the website any more. I wonder if the owners moved in or something? In any case, the one that is still listed was lovely. Smaller than the one we rented, but less expensive as a result . My husband's company paid for our stay (it was a work trip for him and I tagged along). Had we been paying, we would have taken the lower level unit!

TexasAggie, there now is vigorous action by the Amsterdam city government against apartment owners and letters who offer their apartments as short stay holiday lets. Controlled rental apartments are tightly controlled in Amsterdam, with huge waiting lists (a wait of 10 years is no exception), so there is a crackdown against people who effectively steal dwellings from the city's inhabitants to make a profit off of tourists such as yourself. That's why many of these apartments are disappearing from the short stay market.

@ticadonita: that's a shame. Does Pension Homeland have something available for you? It's adjacent to the centre, in a green haven of peace, not expensive at all and privately owned.

Oh, just fly to CPH. Train is interminable. There used to be a night train, but no longer.

Thank you menachem and texas aggie. Interentsting to hear about what is happening with people renting out their apartments short term. There does seem to be a lot on airbnb, but I guess illegally.
I will look at at Pension Homeland right now. Is October a busy month for tourists in Amsterdam as there do seem to be lots of rentals that are already sold out.
We were looking at taking a train to Amsterdam from CPH.. not in the other direction, but I guess the flight would be much shorter and I think we will be getting tired by then, having been to London, Tallin, Helsinki, St Patersburg and Stockholm.
Would you suggest a train to London from Amsterdam or a flight? We leave from London on the 25th back home to Costa Rica and plan to leave Amsterdam on the 20th. I will look on my own as well, but wondering if a day train would include some interesting scenery. I just like trains in Europe more than flying.

There's a number of conventions in october that make it a busy time. A train to London is not scenic at all. I'd fly: it's a short hop. If you can arrange it and the price is right: fly into London City Airport.

This is also a cool place

L'Ambassade, mentioned above, is a series of traditional merchant home's on the the beautiful Herengracht Canal, not city center, rather a perfect location. Easy access to trams, dining.

One more question: Anyone familiar with Amsterdam, know if this is a good area to stay? It is supposedly in the Museum District:
The address of my apartment is:
Frans Halsstraat 5
1072 BJ Amsterdam
It is situated on the first floor.

Train: from the airport you can take a train to Central Station (15-20 mins) and from there trams 16 or 24 (12 mins). Get off at Marie heineken Plein or Wetering Circuit. From there its a short 2 min walk as my apartment is just on the other side of the block where the tram stops

Bus 197 // Rijksmuseum stop

Thanks again.

You can also take a train Schiphol to WTC -in southern suburban Amsterdam and take tram or taxi from there to hotel - would perhapsbe quicker and easier to navigate that much simpler station.
