I would not do ANYTHING about it.I would wait and see what happens, another letter, another credit card statement. If it ever appears on your statement then you call your credit card company and let them do the work for you.Don't waste any time/energy on this sort of thing.

[email protected] -> If it's a credit card, did you know that the credit card company can do basically nothing if it's from one country to another? They can ask, but if the other side still refuses to budge they have no international jurisdiction. If the ticket is legit and they end up charging double, there's going to be absolutely nothing the CC Company can do about it.

Basically it's bad advice.

First find out if the ticket is legitimate.

If it is, pay the fine. That is what an honest, decent person would do. What kind of person are you?

Thanks to everyone who answered with intelligent comments. We are going to contact the San G police to verify the legitimacy of the claim. We still don't believe we were in a no parking zone, and there was no ticket on our rental car windshield upon returning to the car. We were just wondering if this had ever happened to anyone else, and if the scam could be under the direction of the local police, you know...rental car...must be tourists. Anyway, in answer to those of you who have questioned our integrity, we are decent, honest people who will do the right thing, just checking out what seems to be a little questionable.

Now this is exactly why we have problems like Enron and Worldcom.

I received a parking ticket in London in 1971. Did not pay and I still look over my shoulder on any visit back to the city.

Linda, just let me make it clear I wasn't criticising you, it was don't pay/stayhome (same person I'm sure) I was commenting on.
I may need to clarify that I am an American, despite my email address!

Doug

Linda, what a nice person you are.

Reading over my post, I see that it was too agressive. I'm sorry.

It just hit me that people on this forum are so scathing at anything people say or do, even inadvertently, that could be the least bit rude while in Europe. Accusations of Ugly Americanism are common.

Then these same people say "Don't pay the ticket. You can get away with it; don't be a fool." What kind of impression does that give of Americans?

Do you think just Americans ignore parking tickets in Europe....or just Europeans ignore parking tickets in America or ....

In 1973, I got a parking ticket in Montreal, Canada. The ticket was obviously incorrectly filled out. I mean I had a red car and under coleur the gendarme had written rouge.

Of course I ignored such an obviously incorrectly filled out ticket. And you know what...I never heard from them again.

If they can't do anything about it, you don't pay parking tickets. Most of them are illegally issued anyway and are issued just to increase the coffers of municipallities or to harass citizens.
