Paris Nord to St Paul Marais translation please

We will arrive from Brussels and staying at Hotel Sevigne in the Marais.
I have put the details into the ratp route map and have the info but as this is the first time for us in France I havent yet got my head around their train systems and the lingo.
Ive cut and pasted the RATP instructions but would like to know if it means I just change platforms - or go up to the street or down to the metro for both............is the direction mean the exit end of the Gare du Nord platformm... geez, basically need translation please hee hee - Id rather ask you guys then be wandering around the platform exhausted and with luggage trying to learn the system 2 minutes into arrival (Ill leave that for day 2 hee hee)
Thanks for any help you can give once again - here it is:
Go to : Station RER Gare du Nord
Direction: Villeneuve-Saint-Georges
from: Gare du Nord
to : Chatelet-Les Halles
Go to : Chatelet
Direction: Chateau de Vincennes
from: Chatelet
To : Saint-Paul (Le Marais)
Go to : Saint-Paul (Le Marais) - Metro

To simplify: take any RER train going south from the Gare du Nord to the Chatelet station. Transfer to the métro going toward Vincennes. Get off at St. Paul. Your RER ticket is valid on the métro and vice versa within the actual boundaries of Paris.

But from the Gare du Nord you might be able to find a métro which connects to Vincennes-Etoile line without going through the Chatelet maze, which is to be avoided if possible.

To avoid the dread Chatelet station you could take from GdN the Metro line 5 (direction Place d'Italie) and transfer at Bastille to Metro line 1 (direction La Defense) and travel one stop to St. Paul, which is quite close to rue Mahler. If you are in the mood for a stroll of about 5 blocks (and lacking burdensome luggage) you could even walk from the Bastille station - just head up rue St Antoine and rue Mahler will be on your right just about where rue de Rivolil merges into rue St Antoine.

RER would obviously be quicker to Chatelet les Halles than line 4, with which you would also have to change there.

Changing involves a fair hike within the station, whether you do it at Chatelet or Bastille. At Chatelet you at least get a moving pavement for the longest bit, but it is a bit of a maze, since it connects two different stations and several different lines. At Bastille you will have a corridor of about a hundred yards and several staircases (line 1 is elevated at that point, though it's quite pleasant to get to a platform above ground with a bit of a view of some boats).

The Sévigné is the best part of half a mile from Bastille - if you do want to walk, take the exit for the Rue St Antoine/ Boulevard Beaumarchais.

Everyone is describing a very complicated route to your hotel. Stairs and long correspondances in various stations are hard with luggage--and if you have never been to Paris, CONFUSING. Walk off the platform, out the front door of the Gare and take a taxi to your hotel. It might be 15€ including tip, surcharge for pickup at a gare, and luggage.

As much as I love riding the rails I have to totally agree with Gretchen on this. The best way to avoid that which YOU have described as the worst: wandering around the platform with luggage is to take a taxi.

There is nothing wrong with doing yourself a favor for a change.

How do to it without climbing stairs:

If you don't have a lot of luggage and don't arrive during rush hour, you can get on the #65 bus (Direction Gare de Lyon) outside the northeast corner of GdN and ride it to Pasteur-Wagner. Wait at the same stop for the next #69, and ride it to Birague (at the foot of Rue de Sévign&eacute. Your hotel is around the corner and 30 yards up the street.

On the buses, the next stop is always displayed on a readout at the front of the coach. When you see your stop's name, press the nearest red button to request a stop.

Both bus legs are covered by any RATP transport pass.

That's wrong. You should ride the #69 to the Saint-Paul stop. A highly detailed map of the Saint-Paul neighborhood can be downloaded from

I see no plans for and "RATP pass". They will have to buy the ticket on the bus? And finding bus stops going the correct direction is not always the easiest thing, particularly never having ridden the bus/seen the city.

Gretchen is absolutely correct: in order to use a transit pass, you will have to buy it first. And before you can board a bus, you will need to find the stop.

Thanks for the clarification.

"Direction" refers to the last stop on any métro line. Knowing that is absolutely key to working the Paris métro system. Whenever you travel on the métro you will be looking for "Direction" signs, i.e., signs that point you to the last stop on a particular line.

But really, do yourself and your traveling companions a favor and don't start this trip out with a nightmare in Chatelet. On my first trip to Paris I was lost underground there for literally an hour. I still avoid it like the plague. Follow Gretchen's advice and take a taxi.

By the way, the map of Gare du Nord is also here:

http://www.ratp.info/orienter/plan_telech_quartiers.php

Notice the green "65" bus stop signs to the right of the tracks behind the building. The one you want says "Gare de Lyon" (on the west side of the street).

I agree take a taxi!

St Cirq explained the "directyion"..the "GO TO" is the stop where you get off.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the time spent on answering and the explanations... which exhausted me just reading them, so appreciated you writing them!!
So decision??? - taxi! - I seem to get on a role when planning and always forget to sometimes take the easy option. Thankyou!
(4 years ago we arrived in Amsterdam after a 21 hour flight from Oz and caught the train into Amsterdam...easy, then was dumb enough to jump a tram following my researched info to get to our hotel.... 1 hour later and having jumped on and off the tram going backwards and forwards a few time - exhausted we realised we could have nearly walked to the hotel from the the station!@
AND HERE i AM NEARLY PLAYING THAT GAME AGAIN! - TAXI TAXI TAXI/.. Im obviously not a quick study (I think its the automatic miser reaction coming out in me hee hee)
thanks again all -
The metro can wait for day 2!

Thanks Sarah, while I think of it - if your going to Anne Franks house - go early or late as the line can go for miles! and then when your inside everyone is in your face and talking loudly so no atmosphere at all. (a real disappointment)
Amazing isnt it - weather and crowds have such an impact on "a moment" during travels
You have fun too!
