I'll be in Paris with my boyfriend after a whirlwind (expensive!!) World Cup tour and would like to spend no more than $600 for a hotel for 6 nights.

Ideal locations: Marais, St. Germain, Latin Quarter...if at all possible Eiffel Tower, Champs Elysees (long shots, I know).

We don't need luxury and hot and heavy romance, but would like to be fairly central and have a clean, not-too-cramped room. It will be his first time in Paris (my 4th) and I'd prefer to avoid experiences that might make it the last

Thanks in advance.

You'll be looking for a 1*-2* hotel with rates no more than 85€.

p.s. you can have a small, plain room AND 'hot and heavy romance', they're not mutually exclusive

Dave_in_Paris recently listed this one:

http://www.cosmos-hotel-paris.com/

My son is going to stay there next week. If you click on my name, you will see the thread where it is listed and other info. I was asking about hostels.

If you search on cheap hotels you will find lots of info.

I also looked on www.venere.com You can search by price and area. Double check them on Tripadvisor.

Thanks for the recommendations. I've actually been doing the double-checking with Trip Advisor for a couple of hours but was hoping someone with experience--recent or otherwise--could have added a personal recommendation.

Cosmos' prices are great, SkiBum, thanks.

Gem, do look at the end of the following thread because a couple of the rec's given by Christina and Dave today look pretty good.

Also check out the rec's here:

That Hotel Tinquetone looks interesting.

And this one looks great for a couple of youngsters

Remember, these smaller hotels aren't going to have AC.

Hotel de France Invalides is in the 7th district, near the Eiffel Tower, very well-regarded, and has repeat clients.

This is why I love fodors...information overload!

Of the recommendations in my budget, none of which are in preferred areas, I've narrowed it down to:

1. Notre Dame Hotel, 75011, 70 euros/night
2. Hôtel Plessis, 75011, 74 euros/night
3. Hotel International, 75011, 70 euros/night
4. Hotel de Blois, 75014, 62 euros/night

Does anyone know anything about Hotel Baby, rue Chénier in th 2nd? It was recently renovated in 2005 and I like the area just because it's central (hookers notwithstanding). Has anyone stayed here or heard anything about the hotel itself?

And I quite like Picpus, but how does the location compare to the others? I know the metro goes everywhere but I'd like to be able to enjoy walking around the hotel area too, not just shuttling to "attractions" underground.

Thanks.

Here is an excellent budget hotel in a great location:
http://www.hotelgobelins.com/

I think the location is a little better than Picpus or the ones near République and it's a nice, clean hotel, quite nearby the Latin Quarter.

Of the ones you listed, I guess I would pick the Plessis, which gets good reviews and is in the vicinity of the canal St Martin, a nice market which takes place every Tuesday and Friday and a wonderful boulangerie/patisserie.
The International is less convenient to the Métro but is close to the canal, which is nice.

I also like the Montparnasse location of the de Blois. I once stayed on the same street of the Notre Dame, I find it's a bit too close to République, it might be noisy as well.

The Hotel Monge, just outside the 5th, I believe, gets absolutely glowing reviews here and on tripadvisor.com.

It might be just a bit outside the budget, but really close for the quality and value.

Here's an option that I see occasionally in newspaper travelogues:

Hotel DeVillas
5th, near Jardin de Plantes/Gare d'Austerlitz
TripAdvisor reviews indicate it's not as attractive as website photos, but I put in your dates and got 83eu/night for a king-bed-room.

One advantage of Hotel Monge is that it has air conditioning.

Hotel Monge is gorgeous, but too expensive. I'm not happy with any of the options I listed before so I'm starting from scratch.

Budget max is still 85eu/night (not a penny more!), but really would prefer under 80eu. Any opinions on Hotel Sofia, rue de Sofia in the 18th?

Thanks for your patience.

gemeaux,

I can personally recommend Hotel de Chevreuse.

Hotel de Chevreuse
3 rue de Chevreuse, 75006
(1-1/2 blocks to Vavin Metro station)
Rooms are 'cozy' and have private baths - very clean.
4 stories and no elevator so you might ask for a lower floor.

Tel: 33 1 43 20 93 16 (English spoken)
Fax: 33 1 43 21 43 72
(no email - no website)
single room 40€-60€
double room 60€-70€
breakfast 6€ (optional - and not worth it, many inexpensive great cafes nearby)

bardo,

Thank you! Thank you! I just called and made a reservation @ 68eu/night, so not bad at all! I didn't think I'd get this location at this price. I'll be sure to report on my stay (and I'm holding you responsible ).

Thanks to all who provided recommendations!
