There have been responses on this subject; try doing a search. I have missed it both times in Paris, but it seems to get good reviews if you aren't claustrophobic.

I went to the catacombs last month and my friend and I found it very interesting, albeit very strange. I have no idea as to the issue but a few years back the National Geographic ran a fabulous bit about the catacombs that you might be able to track down via the www or your local library.

It is correct that you would avoid this place if you are claustrophobic. We enjoyed it on several levels; one being that it was one of the few “attractions” in Paris that was not packed with tourists and fellow travelers. For our part we thought it was a very interesting diversion.
We did visit the catacombs. They were definitely intersting. Freaky though. The ceilings were low but not so low that you had to bend down or anything. It was definitely different and it wasn't "touristy" like the other places. I also enjoyed shopping in the area around there when we were done. Thing is that you do need to know some french to get by with shopping.

David, or geoff, or both if you are the same person: I'm curious. Did you do a search? I just did and found more than 50 separate topic responses some with an many as 20 posts of information. It is all you wanted to know and much more.

Just wanted to point out that the site linked to by Elaine refers to visits to the subterranean maze under Paris, also called the "catacombs", not to the "official" site people can visit.

Well...one can visit (illegally) these others catacombs too, but you'd better be adventurous and very well informed.

The official catacombs are nothing like what is described on this web site. Just in case people would picture themselves crawling in deserted and dark galleries.

Were rock quarries. Now you can see the bones and skeletons from way back when from old cemetaries when the cemetaries were so piled with skeletons it became a health menace. Has skulls and bones of millions of people, if that is your wish to see. Has received mixed reviews; some people like them, others not at all. Bring a flashlight. Here's information:

Catacombes - are open Tuesday to Sunday 2:00-4:00 and in addition Saturday and Sunday mornings from 9:00-11:00.
location is at 1, place Denfert-Rochereau
Metro Denfert-Rochereau
Tel: 01-43-22-47-63
Note: You do not exit the Catacobes at the same place you entered - the exit is at a different location (in case you're meeting someone).
