Paris - best photo ops

Looking for the best locations (i.e. angles/directions) to take pictures of the Tower, statues, gardens, etc. Saw a post that referenced "lining up The Thinker with the Eiffel Tower in the background..." This is what I'm looking for - different approaches for more impact. Thanks.

Thank you for reminding me of one of our favorite photos...a picture of me sitting in the gardens of Musee Rodin, with the Thinker sitting behind me~
The other fav photo is on that I took on a fall day in th Luxembourg Gardens,we had been sitting on a bench watching some children playing, I stood up and turned toward the Palace and the sky was almost completely black with the sun shining around the edges of these clouds, right over the Luxembourg Palace..made a very dramatic photo~Paris is just one huge photo op!
Have a wonderful time~Cps>in the Rodin Museum gardens, by the restrooms is a headless armless torso of a man..I took a photo of my husband standing with his arm around it like they were buddies, it is a funny sight...and NO-he did not actually touch it!:0)
The best photo I took was a panoramic from the top of Sacre Couer, with one of the bell towers in the left foreground. The Eiffel Tower was right in the middle.

The second was om the Musee D'Orsay by the big clock in b&w, came out really cool -- 19th C. looking.

The third was Luxembourg Gardens -- facing the Pantheon.

I put my favorite Paris photos on www.costumegoddess.com/paris.htm
One I like is the Metro stop nearest the Louvre where I could see the lion sculpture, the ferris wheel, the obalisk, and the Eiffel tower in the background. The day was very overcast or it would've been even better. I love the art Nouveau doorway on Ave. Rapp, I love the one in front of the Place de Republique sculpture, and singing at the Cafe' Rive Droit, which, without the sign in the background, might've been anywhere. Signs are important to include.

The tower from Passy cemetery; Notre Dame from the quai Montebello at sunset or very early in the morning (from pont St Michel very early in the morning); the Louvre through the Pyramid; Sacre Coeur from St Vincent cemetery; any of the gardens in the rain.

Well, Kelly and c, Bob thinks photos in a museum are "incredibly declasse." I disagree, but maybe he's classier than us. Are photos in a park, church, or monument declasse also? Tell us what classy people photograph, Bob, and show examples of your work, please.
And I was ripped off (he's "sorry") for an apartment. I guess all the people on this board who asked about that deal were wrong, then.
Thanks for your constructive critique! I'll try to be a better person.

Jill, one of my favorite photo ops, but it is kinda tricky....

Go to the Louvre courtyard (preferably at night when there is less traffic). If you stand facing the Arc du Carrousel(your back is to the Pyramid), and you look straight through the Tuileries, you can see the Eiffel Tour and Arc D'Triomphe in the distance (they all line up). If you can get the right angle, you have all three monuments in your picture. Makes a really great picture if you can do it...

Uh oh, dina, you have attracted the dreaded anonymous basher on the board! Lurking behind each seemingly harmless subject, waiting to pop out and strike.Never contributing to the thread itself, only to say something nasty and unfounded to a certain poster.Oh well, dina, I for one, think your posts are charming, and who cares if "Bob" thinks anything is declasse! Actually-I think BOB and his thoughts are declasse!Actually, who cares about Bob?!

One of our favorite photos of Paris, my husband took of me in the D'Orsay, standing under the clock.
Another is in a small park where there is a statue of an angel holding someone in her arms, I am sitting in front of the angel on a bench, and it looks (and felt) like I had this huge guardian angel behind me.
Photos are personal and individual, whatever you think looks good is good, whatever you want to remember is your business.I wish what was "declasse" was this attacking of fellow posters.

Erin, I think you are "misremembering" a bit. That shot from the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel through the Tuileries to The Arc de Triomphe at l'Etoile would not include the Eiffel Tower (it would be off to the left) but it would include the obelisk at Place de la Concorde.
Jill, one of my favorite pictures I ever took in Paris was of the facade of Notre Dame near sunset. Apparently the light was just right so that it made the cathedral look like it was bathed in gold.

I spent a rainy week in March in Paris last year and got some of the best black and white photos that I so enjoy. The Seine looking towards Ille de Cite from the bridge, Notre Dame from the quai, and some charming photos of french schoolchildren playing in Parc Monceau - rain in Paris can bring about some rather menacing clouds which make for an energetic black and white. Actually it's pretty hard not to get good approaches in Paris - it's a wonderfully well lit city!

The tower: the best view is from the terrace of the Palais de Chaillot, straight across the river. You can also get good views from Notre Dame's towers and the Arc de Triomphe. It is important to note the sun's direction. If you want the sun on the front of it (usually more attractive unless after sunset or before sunrise), then you need to know the sun will be on it from the front in the evenings at Palais de Chaillot and mornings on the Champs de Mars. My favorite shots of the tower are the ones that include area streets or unusual ones like the tower reflected in a wine glass or water puddle, so keep your eyes open.

Others:

High points - the Eiffel Tower (although it is almost too high), bridges near Notre Dame, Notre Dame towers, Arc de Triomphe, La Samaritaine Department Store, and the Pompidou.

Statues and such - the Stravinsky Fountain near St. Eustache church and the Pompidou; the cemeteries; the Palais de Chaillot; the Musee d'Orsay; the Musee Rodin gardens; Luxembourg and Tuileries Gardens; the big head and hand outside St. Eustache

Parks and children - Luxembourg and Tuileries Gardens (especially the first); the Palais Royal courtyard. All these have gardens too.

Notre Dame - what Elvira said + the park behind the cathedral; you can also get good shots from some of the bridges, especially in the golden light of late afternoon.

People in general - anywhere, but especially parks, outdoor cafes, the Champs Elysees, around Sacree Coeur, street markets such as Rue Cler, and the Beaubourg area.
Visit the Montmartre cemetery to get eerie shots of the many feral cats hanging around the very old structures and being fed by little old ladies in their black raincoats(they have to hide the cat food from the guards at the entrances). A unique setting.

I'm looking at a picture I took last year from the "gargoyle level" of Notre Dame- gargoyle in the foreground, Eiffel Tower in the distance. I contributed it to the Fodorite picture page, but it seems to be missing.

Thank you Kate, for your kind-hearted defense.
Does anyone have these Paris pictures they describe posted anywhere? The descriptions make me want to see them.

I have a handful on my site at www.oneeyed.homestead.com, but I took them before I really got serious about photography. I am looking forward to returning.

Dan, you must have very high standards for your "serious" photography. That's a magnificent Eiffel Tower picture; the dramatic sky being the perfect backdrop and the fountains in the foreground. A great shot of the beautiful, spacious d'Orsay interior too; you must've arrived early;I remember it as being MUCH more crowded when I was there! The boat on the Seine at dusk....I enjoyed putting myself mentally into every one of these scenes!

Take a boat ride on the Seine, either morning or late afternoon to avoid sun directly overhead. Will get interesting perspectives as you pass by Notre Dame & then back towards Eiffel Tower.
