One week in Rome - should we attempt Tuscany??

HI! We have never travelled to Italy before and really want to see Rome. We will be there for a week. However I really would love to see something more romantic and picturesque and was thinking Tuscany. Would that be a waste of travel time as we only have a week? I am not sure how far and difficult it is to get there. Does anyone have any other recommendations for something like Tuscany that is nearer to Rome and easy to get to tha we can spend a couple of days?? Thanks!

Hi miu,

Will you have only a week for Rome and the rest of Italy?

If so, I suggest a daytrip or overnight to Orvieto.

See http://www.argoweb.it/orvieto/orvieto.uk.html

Lunch the garden at I Sette Consoli Pzza Sant’Angelo 1A phone/fax 011 39 0763 343911
is about 40E pp and well worth the trip.

Hi Miumiu,

I agree with Ira and highly recommend Orvieto. It's easy to get to by train, 1 hour. A beautiful town and one of the more unique hilltowns, although it's in Umbria, not Tuscany. You could easily spend 1 or 2 nights there, much to do and see.

The underground tour, the Duomo, the well, the Etruscan tombs, wonderful galleries, shops and restaurants. A 1/2 day trip to nearby Civita di Bagnoreggio is not to be missed. Very interesting, tiny and scenic. You can get there by bus, if I remember correctly Rick Steves gives directions in his Italy book (although I read the version from several years ago).

Another possibility is Tivoli. I did this as a day trip out of Rome in Sept. It was a real highlight. Using Steve James' excellent directions, take the metro then the bus. Walked to Hadrian's Villa, better ruins than the Palantine Hill, and then got a local bus up to Tivoli for Villa D'Este. The fountains were wonderful!!

If I were going somewhere to stay overnight, I would choose Orvieto. It's magic in the evenings.

Buon viaggio!

when you say "a week" do you mean 7 full days in Rome and 2 additional days of travel (to and from)? If so, you definitely have time to take a day trip to a small tuscan town. But if you have only 5 days in Rome with the other 2 being travel days then I would suggest that you stay put and enjoy Rome.

You can see Rome in 4-5 days, including your arrival day. It all depends on how fast you wish to see things. Makeing good use of your arrival day not only saves time, but gets you moving and more relaxed after the long flight.

Plan your sights to best use the time you have. Plan a route with no backtracking. Make reservations everywhere you can, this will avoid wasting time in lines. Allow time to relax.

Several full day or overnight trips are possible. Florenace, Pompeii, Assisi, Orvieto.

No matter what, do not rush all over the place. Take your time, relax, and enjoy yourself.

Here's a different idea.
I know it's wonderful to stay in one place for a longer time and really get a feel for it, but another fun idea is to get a taste of more places. Again, I'm not sure what your "week" means exactly, but it's feasible to do 2 nights in Rome, 2 nights in Tuscany, and 2 nights in Florence. We actually did a wonderful driving trip one year that was definitely quick, but we LOVED it and got a fabuolous taste of Italy. We flew into Venice, spent one night; drove to Florence, spent 1 night; drove to Chianti, spent 2 nights; and drove to Rome and spent 2 nights. I know its SOUNDS crazy, but it was lovely, relaxing, and quite an adventure. We treasure our memories, and now are planning our second trip to Italy, returning to the a couple of the same places for more and trying some new places.
