Oktoberfest

We will be at Oktoberfest on Septembeter 23 and 24 in the middle of the week. Will we need reservations to the beer tents?

Get there before 4:00 and you should be able to find a spot. Normally you need a large group (I think 8) to reserve a table.
http://www.oktoberfest.de/en/

Sorry xxx - but yes if you've never been there, Oktoberfest is basically in September. Depending on the year, only the first couple of days of October are actually in Oktoberfest.

Octoberfest ends on the first Sunday in October. We went last year and had a great time.
I went 3 times in the late sixties and the only thing that has changed is the music.
During the week in the daytime, no. During the week in the evenings, also no, as long as you get to the tents by about 5 o'clock at the latest (4pm on Fridays). Later than that, probably yes, though you can get lucky.

Do what we did on our first visit to the Octobefest in 1970 with another couple.

We entered the Lowenbrau tent and it was packed. Then we noticed small areas on the side of the tent with railings that had room at some tables. We went there and ordered a beer. One of the gentlemen at another table asked us who we were with. I replied "US Army". He laughed. Seemed we were sitting in the VIP booth for Lowenbrau customers and vendors by invitation only. The gentleman pointed out the guard at the entrance to this area. The guard was not there when we walked up and we had not known any better.

Our German friend told us to enjoy the free beer and pretzels but warned us that once we left we probably could not get back in.

We stayed and enjoyed the brew.

Thanks, Lowenbrau!

You would not be so lucky anymore, last year with 911 the security was much more obvious, but not harsh. During the week it is actually harder to get a seat in the tents, because that is when all the local businesses have reservations for their clients; friends, ets.

We were there 3 Days last year, the opening Sat, Sun & Mon, the worst time was Monday, on the weekend there were a lot of people drinking of course, but Monday was the only time I really saw ALOT of people Drunk--passing out in their food--throwing up wherever they were etc.

That was also the night when we watched as a gentleman was escorted out of a tent (by very polite policemen), and let go in front of the area; instead of walking away he ran over the picnic tables; picked up a bench and threw it at the officers. We expected to see him beat up then and there, but the police just got him to the ground and took him away in handcuffs (maybe the beating came later).

As far as getting a table, get there as early as possible, it is easier to get a seat for 2 than for a big group, all the tents also have tables outside, so don't forget to check there. And if you can't get a table right-away enjoy the rest of the carnival, there are shot stands around the grounds, so you can quench your thirst as you walk around, not to mention some great food.
