Now what's wrong with the search function?

I tried to search for all threads on Hungary and it just timed out. What's wrong now? Shouldn't I be able to do a general country search? I specially wanted to find an old thread started by Lindi which was really good and had alot of questions and answeres about Hungary.

Suppose Lindi hadn't marked the thread for Hungary? Then a search with Hungary selected wouldn't find it. It's a funky search function (like much else about Fodors), and it pays to try as many variations as possible. If you can remember a keyword that may have been in the thread, try the search >>without<< selecting Hungary.

I have NEVER been able to use the search function here. It always says "connection timed out." Is it just me?

How long is it supposed to take. I waited along time and nothing happens.

My experience so far leads me to believe it's your internet connection speed - when I'm at work and using a T1, I can always use the search function just fine. But at home on a (very slow) cable internet connection it's never worked. Always says "connection timed out."

I have cable modem and the search never times out -- but that doesn't mean it works all that well. I can't tell you how many times I've searched on a term and when I go through the threads, only some of them actually have the term I searched on (I use the MS "find" to find the term in text). Or sometimes I know very well that something I've posted ought to be included in the results and it doesn't show up. Or all the results are from months ago, with nothing in the past few days. And You have to tinker so much with "exact phrase" and "area" (state, region, area of interest) that an exhaustive search would take most of your day. <BR> <BR>It's a seriously flawed program, even if you don't get timed out.

Yes -- the little box at the top of the screen titled "Text Search" will actually search the entire database (in theory).
