Norwegian Coastal Cruise Weather

I will be doing the Hurtigruten cruise in mid September and was wondering how cold it gets in the north, particularly between the Lofotens and Kirkenes. Will I have to bring warm winter woollies or will it be mild? Keep in mind that my home town is Sydney Australia and cold for us is about 13 degrees celsius.

Wear a good Australian wool sweater under a windbreaker and you are all set. Roses bloom in Tromso -- kept warm by the Gulf Stream waters that branch and swing northward. Be prepared for high winds ashore. Especially at the North Cape. Take along a pair of wool gloves, just in case. Your ship cruises protected from the open Atlantic behind a barrier of islands except for one 40-mile stretch near the Lofotens. You will love the journey.

Got back from trip to New York June 3. I spent a month in Finland and Norway was lucky on the weather and thats what it is "luck'. I was on the "old" boat the "Lofeten" and it was the best trip I have had, great crew and passengers. Like the other reponse said take a good sweater and rain/wind breaker. If you are on a new boat it just like a cruise ship. To give you an idea of what I needed for the month fit under the seat and in a back pack. You will have a great time and if I can be of help let me know. I will be closing down in a week so will not be able to respond to "E" mail after that.

Realized I did not make it clear on the weather but when we left Kirkenes May 21 it was snowing. In the three days in Kirkenes the temp. was 2-8c. After getting around North Cape it warmed up. Remember the snow was in showers even though we had it on the deck for a few hours. As we moved south into the Lofotens it warmmed up however. Bergen gets more rain than any major city in Norway, although in my three days it only rained two hours. You will have a great time and put on 2 kilos. We had three people from Australia on our boat and were they a kick.
We did this trip in early September and found the weather moderate - some rain, some warm and some wind with combinations. As others have said take layers. We went all the way up and back on one of the older ships and loved it. The big new ones are just cruise ships. This was a real working ship - like a bus for the local people.
Enjoy.
