Northumbria UK short stay in August?
I've got family coming over from the States in August. We'd like to find a self catering cottage in Northumbria, that will permit a 2-night short stay from 8-10 August. All the websites/cottage owners I've contacted so far won't do short stays in the High Season.
There are 6 of us: 2 couples, 1 single adult, and a two year old child. Non-smokers, and no pets. We would prefer something close to the coast, but at this point, I'll take all suggestions.
Any ideas?

It is pretty difficult to find short breaks in the summer and nearly impossible in August. Your best hope would be a last minute booking for someplace that isn't let or has had a late cancellation. Any landlord would be reluctant to rent their cottage for a weekend and ruin the chance for a full week's booking.
You may have to change your plans and look for a B&B instead.

I was hoping to avoid a B&B for a couple of reasons:
1) Unless I'm mistaken, the cost for a B&B is per person, not per room. For just a 2-day short stay, that would be considerably more expensive than renting a self catering cottage. Since we're all on a budget for this holiday, the added expense would mean we'd have to sacrifice something else during the 10 days they will be visiting us.
2) We prefer the autonomy that comes with a self-catering cottage. A large family such as ours does not want to have to worry about waking other guests up if we stay up talking until the wee hours, or anything like that. The activity level of our young son is also a consideration.
Fingers crossed, someone out there has what I need. Keep those suggestions coming!

Try Alnwick Castle - see the properties "holiday cottages" on their web site. Type in Alnwick Castle in google and comes up as first reference. Site says most properties are for week booking, so may be some flexibility if you are lucky.

I know I already posted to your thread - but you really do need to start thinking about B&Bs or other alternatives. Even in less visited parts of the country it is unlikely you will find a self catering place willing to book for just a weekend in August.
If your heart is set on a cottage, one option - not the best but you can think about it: Rent a cottage for the whole week and then see if you have any neighbors, friends or relatives willing to take a short break and use the cottage for the 2nd half of the week.
Even this would be difficult because the majority of cottages rent from Sat. to Sat. But some do rent Fri to Fri and a VERY few allow a start day on any day of the week.
