2nd clue: As a result of the work of a physician in the British navy, and the scurvy-free voyages of this famous explorer and astronomer, who adopted the physician's principles, the British navy in 1804 made it compulsory to issue a ration of lemons or limes to sailors, who were from then on nicknamed "limeys."

The answer I'm coming up with has 9 letters, and no "T" in 4th place (an "E" instead).

All I keep finding is James Cook. No "T"--unless I write it as CaptJimCook.

I'm also thinking Jacques Cook or Jacques Lind or Matthew Flin(ders) - or was the name of the rum-soaked lad required?

With my clues, I was always referring to a person, not a place. "this famous explorer", "this famous explorer and astronomer"

BTW:

The name of the 12 year old boy was Nicholas Young (hence the reference to a young lad - his age and the fact that his last name was Young). He was a stowaway on Cook's ship, The Endeavor, and he was the first to spot(discover?) New Zealand. For his keen eyesight, he was rewarded with rum.
