NO :(

BrimhamRocks Aug 7th, 2003 05:37 PM

Need another clue?

cigalechanta Aug 7th, 2003 05:46 PM

yes! :)

BrimhamRocks Aug 7th, 2003 06:12 PM

1st clue: A young lad with keen eyes was rewarded with rum by this famous British explorer.

2nd clue: As a result of the work of a physician in the British navy, and the scurvy-free voyages of this famous explorer and astronomer, who adopted the physician's principles, the British navy in 1804 made it compulsory to issue a ration of lemons or limes to sailors, who were from then on nicknamed "limeys."

cmt Aug 7th, 2003 06:47 PM

The answer I'm coming up with has 9 letters, and no "T" in 4th place (an "E" instead).

jody Aug 7th, 2003 06:49 PM

Captain Cook /

cmt Aug 7th, 2003 06:51 PM

All I keep finding is James Cook. No "T"--unless I write it as CaptJimCook.

harzer Aug 7th, 2003 06:55 PM

I'm also thinking Jacques Cook or Jacques Lind or Matthew Flin(ders) - or was the name of the rum-soaked lad required?

cigalechanta Aug 7th, 2003 07:01 PM

I thought we were looking for a location not a person??? Help. I'm confused!

jody Aug 7th, 2003 07:14 PM

I'd never heard Captain Cook's first name .he's always been Captain Cook

BrimhamRocks Aug 7th, 2003 11:57 PM

With my clues, I was always referring to a person, not a place. "this famous explorer", "this famous explorer and astronomer"

Jody's got it: Captain Cook. Well done!

BrimhamRocks Aug 8th, 2003 12:01 AM

BTW:

The name of the 12 year old boy was Nicholas Young (hence the reference to a young lad - his age and the fact that his last name was Young). He was a stowaway on Cook's ship, The Endeavor, and he was the first to spot(discover?) New Zealand. For his keen eyesight, he was rewarded with rum.

Jody, are you going to post a clue?

cmt Aug 8th, 2003 04:28 PM

Meanwhile, if anyone would like to play an easier version of this game on another forum, here's the link to the beginning of the thread.

The clues are posted in Italian (sometimes also in English) and the rest is in either English or Italian.

LORDY... I missed seeing this and here I've been sitting on words lately , waiting to get one!

Playing on the O of Cook...6 letters...O is the 3rd..

I sold caffeine to improve your health but now I deal with keeping your wealth.

Some people may recognize this as 6 letters ..some may recognize it only as 14 letters!

BrimhamRocks Aug 8th, 2003 05:10 PM

Lloyds? (And for the 14 letters....Lloyds of London) ?

jody Aug 8th, 2003 05:25 PM

Dag gone Brim..you are GOOD!!!You are obviously English!! Or you read H V Morton!
But make it an easy one I have another to try out ...but first I have to get another answer!

BrimhamRocks Aug 8th, 2003 05:32 PM

LOL.....no, I'm living in the UK, but I'm from the States (Arkansas, to be exact).

I just found it on a website that talked about the history of coffee:

" In 1652, the first coffeehouse opens in England. Coffeehouses are called "penny universities" (a penny is charged for admission and a cup of coffee). Edward Lloyd's coffeehouse opens in 1688. It eventually becomes Lloyd's of London, the world's best known insurance company. The word ?TIPS? is coined in an English coffee house: A sign reading ?To Insure Prompt Service? (TIPS) was place by a cup. Those desiring prompt service and better seating threw a coin into a tin."

jody Aug 8th, 2003 05:39 PM

Hey guy..I love men from Arkansas!

Know what I mean?

BrimhamRocks Aug 8th, 2003 05:52 PM

And if I were a guy, I'd be flattered!
