NEW Crossword Puzzler Thread #2

Wine merchant who dug Phoenicians owned this island. Just 5 letters

harzer Aug 1st, 2003 10:57 PM

I don't dig Phoenicians or Venetians, so "NO IDEA".

How about "Spanish with island get building material" (8 letters)

Clifton Aug 1st, 2003 11:24 PM

I'm sure it's because it's late, but I hear Phoenicians and island and 5 letters and all that pops in my head is Malta.

LVSue Aug 1st, 2003 11:49 PM

Harzer, yours is concrete!

harzer Aug 2nd, 2003 12:11 AM

LVSue, LVSue, how my heart goes out to you ..........

You've earned the right to post a clue

Harzer

BrimhamRocks Aug 2nd, 2003 01:43 AM

If it's not Malta, could it be Capri?

Calamari Aug 2nd, 2003 01:50 AM

Excuse me, but what happend to Degas Paris trip report? Does anyone know?

Steve_James Aug 2nd, 2003 03:30 AM

Crete?

cmt Aug 2nd, 2003 03:58 AM

Not Malta or Crete, but I think Steve MIDHT know this place.

cmt Aug 2nd, 2003 03:58 AM

P.S. Another hint: BRITISH wine merchant.

cmt Aug 2nd, 2003 04:04 AM

That was "might," not "midht.")

British wine merchant who dug Phoenicians owned this island. (Both common alernatate spellings have 5 letters.)

That's a lot of clues now, so keep trying. It's a serious one.

cmt Aug 2nd, 2003 04:09 AM

(Too early to spell. I meant "alternate.") It's also not Capri.

jody Aug 2nd, 2003 04:57 AM

Oddbins has 7 letters so that won't work!

cmt Aug 2nd, 2003 05:16 AM

Not Oddbins (I didn't think that was the name of an island).

Repeat clues:

dig
Phoenicians

Steve_James Aug 2nd, 2003 05:54 AM

Is this island no longer known by that name?

cmt Aug 2nd, 2003 06:00 AM

It's known by several names. Its modern name has 11 letters. However, it is also still called by various versions of its ancient name.

dln Aug 2nd, 2003 07:55 AM

cmt, this is a toughie. By "dig Phoenicians" do you mean "Man I really dig you, babe!" or are we thinking archeology?

Marilyn Aug 2nd, 2003 08:06 AM

I have resorted to my historical atlas and am still coming up blank. I am usually entertained by friends in Britain and so do not have enough experience of British wine merchants for that clue to be helpful.

I was thinking Thera/Santorini, but that's not 11 letters. Are you sure you counted right, cmt?

Help, I can't get on with my day until I know the answer! (But I did like "concrete", harzer.)

BrimhamRocks Aug 2nd, 2003 08:09 AM

Didn't the word have 5 letters, not 11?

Or am I lost again?

Marilyn Aug 2nd, 2003 08:12 AM

Brim -- "It's known by several names. Its modern name has 11 letters. However, it is also still called by various versions of its ancient name."

Thera/Thira/Santorini just fits soooo well, except for the 11 letters.

cmt Aug 2nd, 2003 08:13 AM

dln: You're on the right track asking that question. The answer is BOTH (double meaning, either correct).

Marilyn: Of course I'm sure it's 5 letters. :) I counted on my fingers and used up one whole hand and no more. But the official clue is for the 5-letter name. (You may have been distracted by the reply/additional clue I gave to Steve, who I believe knows the answer.)

P.S. This wine merchant is no longer alive.

cigalechanta Aug 2nd, 2003 08:14 AM

Corse? Ibeza?

Marilyn Aug 2nd, 2003 08:15 AM

cmt, I figured you could count to 5. It was the 11 I wasn't sure about. :-))

cmt Aug 2nd, 2003 08:15 AM

P.S. I'm going to get off the computer soon and may not be back for a long time. If anyone wants to give up and not guess any more, but be the guardian of the answer so you can tell when someone finally gets it, you can e-mail me.

P.P.S Another clue: On the other crossword thread almost all the clues were France-related. This one is not France.

Marilyn Aug 2nd, 2003 08:18 AM

cmt, wait a minute, wait a minute!! I'll be the guardian of the answer! But HOW do I email you? Or just e it to me at [email protected]

sicula Aug 2nd, 2003 08:30 AM

And the answer issssssssssss:

MOYTA (Mozia in Italian)a tiny island only 2.5km in circumference down the coast from Trapani. It was bought in the late 19th century by the scion of the marsala wine dynasty Joseph Whitaker a/k/a "Pip" who promptly set about digging up the whole island looking for Phoenician artifacts. Moyta is the archeological site while San Pantaleo is what this glob of the Stagnone Islands is called: the place names are interchangeable.

cmt Aug 2nd, 2003 08:35 AM

Right!!!! It is Motya(I know you just made a typo) or Mozia. (I knew you'd know this. I knew Steve would, too, but he didn't come back.)

Sicula: You make up the next clue. The answer needs to be travel-related in some way. You tell how many letters the word/name has and give clues to help us guess. Then you need to check back now and then to tell people whether their guesses are correct.

Clifton Aug 2nd, 2003 08:38 AM

Wow, I was never even close. I was looking at island information all morning. Well, until I was sidetracked by reading about Phoenician colonization and atlantic crossings and such. Learned a lot, but not the answer!

cigalechanta Aug 2nd, 2003 08:43 AM

right Clifton, even if I don't guess, I pick up odd pieces of imformation.

cmt Aug 2nd, 2003 08:43 AM

P.S. Sicula, I forgot to tell you that the word you make up has to include one of the letters in Mozia or Motya (you can decide which spelling we are using) and you tell us which letter, and where it is, numerically, in the word you are making us guess. (Many examples of the procedure in the original thread: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34435071 )

cmt Aug 2nd, 2003 08:45 AM

P.P.S. Sicula, if you do not want to play, please say so here, and then dln can decide whether she'd prefer to post her new clear on this thread instead of on the old thread, where she was the last person to guess correctly last night.

Marilyn Aug 2nd, 2003 08:50 AM

Man, I would NEVER have gotten that! Maybe I'll do better on the next one.

dln Aug 2nd, 2003 09:25 AM

Next clue is so easy you won't need me to confirm the answer! Using the Y, a place in England that was the birthplace of a beautiful English woman who was beloved of a certain king. Extra clue--this woman has a town in Texas named after her. Six letters, ends in Y.

jody Aug 2nd, 2003 09:29 AM

Lili Langtry...Jersey ??

jody Aug 2nd, 2003 09:29 AM

Nah...there's no Jersy in Texas now that I think of it! IS THERE???

jody Aug 2nd, 2003 09:32 AM

Whoops again...I thought the town was in TX not the lady! So I'm right, right?

Marilyn Aug 2nd, 2003 09:46 AM

OK Jody, your turn.

kismetchimera Aug 2nd, 2003 09:49 AM

Smiley, texas
