Need Info on: Rome - Tuscany - Venice
My boyfriend and I are planning a visit to Italy & France (Sept 10-25) and need some help/advise specifically on Italy - it'll be our first time in Italy. We're planning on visiting Rome, Venice and Tuscany. Here are my questions: (1) has anyone stayed at Hotel Gambrinus Roma? If so, how was it. Does anyone have any other fave hotels in Rome? (2) Where in Tuscany should we stay, closer to Florence or Siena? (3) Car rentals - has anyone had bad or good dealings with any company specifically? (4) is Bologna worth a visit? (5) Has anyone stayed at the Boscolo Hotel chain? What's it like?
SORRY, it's my first time on a forum so I've probably asked too many questions but I'm hoping to get some help!

Hi danu, always hard to answer whether a city or area is worthwhile visiting or not unless one knows about the travellers interest etc. But personally I love Bologna. A very old city - vibrant and fun with wonderful food. A "university city" so lots of young people plus very lovely residents. Wonderful food and a vibrant shopping area under arcades and lots of history of course.
Not familar with your hotel questions.
You ask whether you should stay closer to Florence or Siena. That would depend on your interest. Staying in a city is usually better then staying on the outskirts and making daily trips into cities. But again, it depends on what a traveller is looking for.
BTW, if you have Sept 10th to the 25th for France and Italy that is more or less two weeks. Do not know if you are counting those days for arriving and departing Europe. Are you doing an open jaw ticket (flying into say France and flying home from Italy)? Do not overplan this trip. And do allow time that will be lost when travelling from one place to another. That always takes more time then one anticipates (packing up to move on, checking out of the hotel, getting to the airport, train station etc. to get to the next place, the actual travel time, getting from the train station or airport to the next hotel, checking in etc.). Probably you will only want to stay in two places in Italy if you are including in these dates France also. Get a good map of France & Italy. Do some research so you can chose the most important places that you want to visit. Have no idea if you are talking about Sept. of this year of Sept of 2006 of course. Best wishes with planning your trip.

Hi Danu,
With only two weeks, I suggest, in this order,
Fly into Venice -1 week- take www.myair.com to Paris Orly -1 week -fly home
Fly into Venice -3 days, train to Florence - 4 days, train to Pisa and fly to Paris Orly -1 week
See www.whichbudget.com
Skip France and do as above, except visit Rome.
You can fly Paris CDG to Bologna.
Hope this helps.

We did two weeks in April. 3 days in Rome, day trip to Orvieto on way to Florence, 2 days in Florence, 3 days in CT, and 3 days in Venice, and two travel days. It was ALOT of traveling but we really wanted to see all of these places.
We stayed at Residenza Cellini in Rome and REALLY liked it. B&B with six rooms, private baths, nice breakfast, great service. I would really book now for all your hotels! Have a great trip!

Just got back from a three week trip to Italy. Be sure to check autoeurope.com . Although there are some alternate view on this bulletin board, for our trip, (pick-up in one city and drop-off in another,) it was clearly the cheapest and easiest. Get the full insurance included.
By the way -- I agree that you should not miss Bologna.
