Hi

Ciao,
trip to Venice is a must and can be done in a very busy day.
1 day in Milan can be enought.
1 day in Como and its lake is another good choice.
Fourth daytrip could be: Turin, Mantua, Sondrio - Tirano - Saint Moritz (CH) with the highest railway in europe, Bergamo....

How old are your kids and what time of year are you talking about? Summer? If you are going when the weather is hot and humid, I suggest you consider staying on Lago di Garda and doing a day trip to Verona. Lago di Garda has activities for kids of all ages, and Verona is a very manageable small city with a great Roman arena, a great castle and notable art. If you don't mind the mobs, humidity and mosquitoes, Venice is of course quite unique, but it does take a "happy camper" attitude and strongly urge you not to attempt to do it in a single day.

Hi-
My kids are 12, 10 and 6 and pretty good travelers. I appreciate all of your suggestions. I know my kids want to see Venice because it's the only place in that area they have heard of but maybe I should consider other places.

We have been to Lake Garda and stayed in the town of Riva Del Garda (northern end) very nice.
I don't know if you will have a car, but I believe that only the very southern towns have train service (use boats to go north if needed).

When my children were that age, we did not hesitate to take them to museums. You'd be surprised what a young child can take away from the experience.
Having said that, the castle in Milan has a wonderful grouping of several museums within the castle walls, including of course a picture gallery, but also statues, armor and weaponry, and Egyptian treasures.
Also, the Duomo has a lift that you can take up to the top spires and climb all around the area, with fabulous views of the city.
Don't forget Odeon Gelato in the main square, on the opposite side of the square from the Duomo. So many flavors...
While you're in the square and if you're looking for a good place for a family to eat, at the very entrance to the Galleria, upstairs, there's a cafeteria -- oh, what's the name? - it might be Ciao, not sure. Anyway, lots of selections for the kids, and you, which won't break the bank.

Big Red is correct that only towns on Lago di Garda have train service, both in the south: Desenzano and Pescheria del Garda. The latter is most convenient to the lake's large amusement park, Gardaland. It is possible to take boats from both Desenzano and Peschiera del Garda to get to other towns on the lake. A regular ferry takes about 4 hours to reach the northernmost end of the lake (which has the most dramatic scenery and a lot of windsurfing). There is a hydrofoil which cuts that time to about 90 minutes, I believe.
I think Milan's greatest attraction is Leonardo's "Last Supper" and walking on the roof of the Duomo is quite special.

We took our 2 teens (15 and 17 years then) to Italy last year and are going to Switzerland and Italy (Lakes area) this July. When we were in Venice last year we stayed at Locanda Armizo infoarmizo.com. We found the name in the Frommer's book. It was a studio apartment. For this trip we're not sure which Lake/town to go to Como, Garda, Cernabbio. We'll be traveling by train. Any suggestions.

On Lake Como, most people stay in the mid-lake area. The towns of Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio form a triangle. The frequency of boat service in the mid-lake area is on of the reasons that people like these towns.
By train, disembark at the Varenna-Esinio station. It is a downhill walk to the boat ramps if you are not staying in Varenna.
As far as which town:
Varenna has a winter population of just a few hundred people. It is quiet at night even in season. Varenna is like small town Italy.
Bellagio is well known (there is a Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas). It is a nice town, catering to tourists.
Mennaggio has nice hotels and eating spots on the waterfront but is also a major traffic stop with north south trade and trade into Switzerland. Mennagio is more commercial then the others.
All of Lake Como is spectacular.
