Need help finding guide for Pompeii

I will arrive in Naples on a cruise ship, docking in Naples only for the day. Will I and my 7 friends be able to find a guide and car that can pick us up at the pier and take us to Pompeii? The ship tour would cost the 8 of us over $400.
Thanks for any information.
Marty

Marty,

Wouldn't you and your friends be able to get a taxi out to Pompeii and then just grab a tour once you got there? I think it would be A LOT cheaper than $400. Read up on it before you go and you might not need a personal guide.

Marty,

I would post on the Fodor's cruise board, or even on cruisecritic.com, on the Europe board if I were you. You'll likely get a more experienced advise there.

That I know, there are plenty of guides in Pompeii, so you won't need to hire one in Naples. As for the car/driver to pick you all at the port, I read something about "sorrento limo" on cruise critic ( or it was here?).

Good luck, and happy cruising,

Surlok

When we got to our hotel in Sorrento, they had information at the front desk about tours. We didn't intend to take a tour to Pompeii until we got there and realized that we didn't want to drive thru the crazy traffic from Sorrento and back again. We used Golden tours and had a great time. It was about $75.00 for 3 of us plus the entry fee into Pompeii.

Sandi, Do you have any more info on Golden Tours? I'm only finding them in Egypt and Germany. Thank you.

Pompeii is awesome. Don't miss it! First, don't pay anymore than you need to. Tour guide, tours etc. are not necessary. However, before you go read as much as you can. Then purchase a guide Pompeii (English Edition) ISBN 88-8882-600-1. Read before you go and try to understand the map that goes with it. Plan on at least 5 hours if you can.
Bring a hat and suntan lotion.
Bring camera and plenty of film. Follow the manual as much as you can. You will know as much as if not more than any of the guides.
A great experience but you will be exhausted by the end of the day. Besure you are fresh before you go. Go early. If you are coming from Roma take the 6:10 train to Naples. There you will switch to a city train to Pompeii. Besure you get off at the archaelogical site and not new Pompeii.
Before you go get reservations for the return trip. If you want to see any of our pictures email and I will send you the address.
Have a good time and besure you see Pompeii!
Garry

Tammy, I'm sorry I didn't keep a brochure on Golden Tours. We stayed at the Hotel Villa Maria in Sorrento and they picked us up in front of the hotel. Maybe you could email the hotel and they could give you a contact phone number? They are at: [email protected]

BTW, the $75.00 included taking us to the top of Vesuvius after Pompeii.

Good luck.
I was on a cruise when I went to Pompeii, I did use the ships excursion. My only suggestion is that you use a guide unless you can memorize everything you read and follow a map closely. The information the guide gave us with very interesting and made the visit really special. I was looking around taking in everything instead of trying to follow a map.
