Munich hotels

We will be traveling to Munich on April 23rd to 28th, and need some recommendations for hotels around $100 a night. Do we need to make reservations in advance or can we get a room when we arrive? Also we are planning on going to Salzburg one evening for a concert should we stay over or drive back to Munich? I am not sure of the distance between the cities. Any suggestions for websites that contain travel times and distances between European cities would be appreciated.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Kathleen: At the recommendation of several of the Fodor's Faithful, we have chosen the Hotel Uhland Garni right in Munich for our trip in May. The hotel is a converted mansion and looks to be quite nice. They have a website you can visit at "http://www.munich-info.de/uhland/enwelcome.html". We were in touch with a Ms. Bridgette Effinger who has been very kind in all of our inqueries. The hotel is about 10 minutes walking distance to the Marienplatz and I believe that the prices you seek are within reason and it will include breakfast. I'd make reservations in advance.

The drive to Salzburg is along autobahn A8 from Munich to Austria. Depending on conditions, would take an hour to an hour and a half being about a 100 mile trip to get there. I suggest trying to stop in Bertchesgaden near the border. It is a lovely town in the valley that was once the retreat of Adolf Hitler and his elite staff. It's worth the visit, even for an afternoon.

Good luck and have fun!
Dear Kathleen,

if you feel like, visit our home-page and then decide, whether you would like to stay with us: www.hotel-jedermann.de

It is always best to reserve in advance.
Talking for our hotel, rooms are still available in different categories.

For daytours to Salzburg you could purchase tickets at the hotel and than even be picked up in the morning. The connection by train is very good, but if you would like to go to a concert, it might be better to stay there overnight.

It would be nice to hear from you. If not, we still would like to wish you a pleasant time in our city and a safe journey!

Yours sincerely

HOTEL JEDERMANN
Family Jenke

Doris Jenke

We have also stayed at the Jedermann and loved it. Nice, clean rooms, huge breakfast and the tram stops right in front of the hotel. The staff was extremely nice and helpful. Best of all, we stayed for 200 DM per night for a family of 4. We hope to visit again next Christmas.

We, too, are staying at the Hotel Uhland which was highly recommended on this forum. And, they have special rates for internet bookings that are quite good! We booked online for 2 nights in a double 'comfort room'(better than 'tourist room') with private bath and full buffet breakfast for 115 DM/night (about $65). I've had very good correspondence with Ms. Effinger, as well.
As for the concert in Salzburg (which we're planning to do, too), if you do decide to stay over, we're staying in the hotel Trumer Stube, which includes the same as above, for 995 AS/per night (aobut $80). I've had very good with correspondence with them, too, and it was also highly recommended on this forum. Email me if you want their email address. By the way, which concert are you planning on attending in Salzburg? They have several each evening and am wondering if you've heard which one is best. Have fun!

Hello, Kathleen. I just got finished responding to your post when I realized that I will be in Munich the same time you will. We will be there April 24 and 25. If you decide to stay in the Hotel Uhland, as we are, perhaps we could hook up for dinner or a drink in a beer hall of something! We could hook up even if you don't stay there, for that matter. I think it'd be pretty neat to meet someone on 'The Forum' as it's been like my 2nd family for the past 6 months! Email me if interested and have a good trip!
