Where can we get a good american style breakfast? Does the main train station have stalls selling this type of meal?

Why would you want an American style breakfast when breakfast at most of the Munich hotels is a feast?

I stay at the Astoria in Schwabing, and I will be the first to tell you that no American breakfast I ever saw compares with the breakfast at the Astoria.

All of the hotels and pensions I have used in Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna have quite a spread for breakfast.

In fact, after I return home, it is hard for me to face the normal greasy spoon fare most American restaurants serve for breakfast.

Bob Brown has stated it very well. We really enjoy the breakfasts in most places in Germany and Austria. While they may differ from place to place, they are usually very filling.

While we too loved the German breakfasts, they aren't what one would think of as an American breakfast--bacon and eggs, pancakes, etc. German breakfasts offer mostly cold meats, cheeses, yogurt, cereal, and breads...or at least that's we got at our hotels.

My guess would be to go to one of the large American chain hotels, preferably one that caters to American tour groups. CJ

i have spent a lot of time in munich on business and even the big international hotels are more geared toward a german style breakfast but here you can get all the elements of an american breakfast without perhaps the pancakes. you will pay dearly for this at a hotel and get no where near good value.

there is none of this at the hauptbahnhof (main station). except there is a burger king upstairs, i believe (doesn't count, i know).

better to stick with how the locals do it.

I can tell you factually that if want a quintessential American-style breakfast, complete with custom-cooked omelets, etc., etc., etc. then head to the Hilton Munich City over at Rosenheimer Platz..no German breakfast I ever saw in Munich is any better than this one.

If you want an "American style breakfast", stay in the United States. Part of the fun/adventure of traveling to foreign countries is to experience the difference in food---culture-architecture-the people and history.

If this doesn't do it, stay home and go to Denny's.

Call me crazy, but I'd rather my kaiser rolls, black bread, butter, jam, soft-boiled egg, cheeses, various cold cuts, yogurt, cereal, juice and coffee or hot chocolate that all comes included with the hotel room.
It would be inconceivable to venture out for anything else.

mm mm, whenever I go to Germany I look forward to the breakfast buffet with the cheeses, the soft boiled egg, the fruits, yogurt and cereal!! jorb, are you sure you need an american style breakfast?

Yeah, half the reason I do to Germany so much is for the killer breakfasts. I love that dark bread!!

What's the big deal if jorb wants an American style breakfast now and then? It doesn't make him/her mean, evil, or an ignorant slimeball. It just means he/she likes bacon, eggs, and pancakes now and then. Lighten up folks.

Okay, this isn't going to be very helpful, but when we were in Munich, we slept in and missed the hotel breakfast. We weren't too worried, though, and ventured out into the city where we were sure we'd find something to eat. As luck would have it, we happened across the Hoffbrau Haus (sp?) first and had beer for breakfast. I don't recommend this, however

the breakfast of champions in Bavaria would in fact be a pair of white sausages (Weisswurst) along with some sweet mustard, a pretzel and half a litre of Wheat Beer (Weissbier or Weizen).

However, speaking of Champions' breakfast and catering more to the need of the OP, Champions, the sports bar at the Munich Marriott Hotel, comes to mind. They should serve a decent American breakfast there, as it is very American in style.

BTW, any of the Hotels' breakfast buffets anywhere in Munich will be more extensive than what the average German will have for his daily breakfast. So doing as the locals do is not really an option, I would say.

Kielbasa is readily available in many places in the USA.

And what's wrong with liquid bread to break one's fast?
