Moulin Rouge

Because of the popularity of the movie, I am considering going to the Moulin Rouge in March but can't find much information about it. Price? Quality? Worth seeing? Are reservations necessary/advisable? Times for show? Safety of neighborhood for women at night? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

There are roughly 3 groups of people who have been there (not me) about equal in size-
One says they thought it was great fun and an all around good evening.
One says the show was fun but the food mediocre and not worth it
One says none of it worth it. I think these are people who have been to Vegas and seen the top-flight shows.
I say - If you want to see it, go. It will be an experience and French people tell me the Moulin Rouge is the most typical. For more Paris information e-mail me: [email protected]

Don't go because of the movie. There is absolutely no relation in the world between the current "show" and "dinner" at the Moulin Rouge and what you see in the movie. It is a dark, rather seedy and worn restaurant filled with busloads of tour groups watching mediocre vaudeville type acts following one of the most medicore meals you could find in Paris. It could be a fun evening for a group (especially if you have a few drinks before you go). Just don't expect any sort of good meal, great entertainment, or anything that looks even remotely like the movie.

You should be able to find a lot of info about it, they have their own website (www.moulinrouge.fr). Also, I would think most guidebooks discuss it at least a little, I know there is also some info probably on www.timeout.com under entertainment. I would guess you could also get tickets and some info through www.ticketavenue.com I myself would never go to something like that as I dislike such forms of entertainment, but that's a personal thing, so it would never be worth it to me except maybe as a sociologist; I don't like Las Vegas shows either, so there you go, I've never gone willingly. I think you'd have to be into that whole concept of "revues" to like it, I imagine you know what that is--a little magic, showgirls, a little dancing of various kinds, etc nothing of any particular talent or interest. If you like that kind of stuff, I bet it will be a nice experience; I know most people think what I do for fun at night is boring beyond words, so there's something for everyone. I could see doing it as part of a group (accompanied with plenty to drink, I agree, a necessity) as a joke if you didn't take it seriously or expect anything.

Hi, did you see the movie? It was totally strange and nothing like the real Moulin Rouge I have heard. I have a friend that was there last year and said they pack you in like sardines, very much a tourist spot. People want to go just because of its history and it being famous in past years. They do have a good web site as a previous poster suggested. Do look it up. If it is something your heart desires, do go. We are going to Paris in June and cannot wait. My big thing is I want to go up into the Eiffel Tower. So I say again, if it is something you want....then go for it. I have also heard the food is just medicore.
